Can a summer romance last forever?

Wren Roberts thought he’d found his fairy tale when he met Mateo Rossi on holiday in Majorca. The wealthy and successful older man swept him off his feet, and before he knew it, he’d thrown caution to the wind and was living in Mateo’s waterside apartment in Venice. It’s a far cry from his harsh upbringing and crummy flat in London.

But as the summer turns to autumn, cracks begin to show. Mateo’s family aren’t welcoming, and there doesn’t seem to be a place for Wren in Mateo’s world. He could have coped with all of that, but Mateo himself seems like a different person away from the sunshine island.

Should Wren have been more cautious in riding off into the sunset when he wasn’t sure what lay over the horizon?

From bestselling author Lily Morton comes a romance about two men who find that sometimes happily ever after doesn’t end there.

Excerpt:

Wren

“I’m sorry. Could you repeat that, Owen?”

My best friend of seven years has the grace to look awkward. “I said that we’re thinking of flying to Madrid to finish the week out. Josh’s friend is having a big party, and they’re bored of Majorca.”

I sit down heavily on the chair in our room. “Yes, that’s what I thought you said.”

He paces over to the window and then turns to face me, his expression one of truculent surprise. It’s because I’m questioning him when he’s got his mind set on something. I can understand his astonishment, because I usually let him have his own way.

“You can still come with us,” he says.

I give him a wry glance. “No, I can’t, and you know it. I maxed out my credit card to come here. The flight to Madrid alone would bankrupt me.”

He gives an exasperated sigh. “You’re being so dramatic, Wren.”

I shake my head. “I’m really not. I can’t pay for whatever expensive place you’re going to stay in. I don’t think I could even afford half the plane journey. They’d have to open the hatch and dump me out over Valencia.”

“Well, I’ll pay”

“No, you won’t.” My voice is sharper than I’d like, and he flinches. I moderate my tone. “I won’t let you pay for anything for me. Your mother is convinced that I’m constantly in the process of fleecing you. She always looks surprised that I’m not twirling a handlebar moustache and giving an evil laugh. I’d hate to prove her right.”

“She doesn’t think that,” he predictably protests. “She loves you.”

I roll my eyes. Only if love means she wants to remove my intestines with a teaspoon. I let it go. After all these years, I’m still unsure whether he was born with a happy filter over his eyes or whether he got it through his upbringing, but I’ve always found it very endearing regardless.

“I can’t come,” I settle for saying again.

“But what will you do on your own?”

I’d been expecting the question, but I still flinch. We’ve been friends since our schooldays and when he went to university, I held out hope that we’d stay friends even though I couldn’t afford to go. This holiday has taught me how naïve that was. When he first mentioned us going to Majorca, I’d been thrilled. I thought it would be just the two of us and I’d have a chance to reconnect with Owen. The hotel had been very expensive, but he’d pushed for it and finally, I’d maxed out my credit card, feeling guilty that he was reining himself in and thinking it would be a memory I could hoard. My first time abroad.

However, when we got here, it was to find his friends from university waiting for us. The first night he’d enquired breathlessly whether I minded them going out with us. Of course, I’d agreed, and I’ve hardly seen him alone since. Wherever they went, he had to follow, and he dragged me along with him on outings to private beaches, expensive bars, and yachts belonging to their parents. I’d tried to break off on my own, telling him honestly that I was happy to explore and do other things while he was with his friends, but he wouldn’t hear of it. Maybe it was guilt on his part, but it’s a sure fact that my wallet would have been fuller and I’d have had a better holiday if he’d left me alone.

It’s sad to realise finally that we won’t ever reconnect now.

“A Highly Recommended Beautifully Exciting Story”

I’ve come to understand that Lily Morton will be one of those go-to authors, as the stories which have been read have all been stellar.  My recent read is certainly no exception.  I don’t even think I read the blurb, prior to reading, I actually thought one of the characters would be..mentally challenged.  Well.  I was so wrong with that premise.  Either way would have been fine, but, I’m beyond delighted with my most recent read.

I squishy, feel-good loved The Cuckoo’s Call, by Lily Morton, as it was such an all around great read.  With the ever-present beautiful world-building, this time of Majorca, Spain and Venice, Italy, it was almost like the reader had taken a trip to these glorious sites as well as the main characters.  Characters, many of whom were wonderful and amazing and strong yet understandably needy, and yet on the flip side, a few characters were just as ridiculously annoying.

I loved the storyline that despite it’s heartbreaking undertone, it’s direction was actually heartwarming, humorous, exciting, and incredibly gratifying.  As a result, I am all blissed-out as a result of such an amazing read.  I really, really liked it….:)

Synopsis:

Standalone | MM Mafia Romance | Best Friend’s Father | Age Play | Hurt/Comfort

Unshackled spares no one, and along the way, you’ll get everything from high-speed car chases, secret meetings in the dark, and the rawest hours of grief, to strong family ties, humor, and unconditional love.

In the wake of the bloodiest war the Sons of Munster had seen in a long time, we were supposed to celebrate our victory and move on with our lives. I wanted to see my brothers-in-arms dance and drink way too much. I wanted to hear laughter and Irish music. Instead, we were a syndicate crushed by grief.

Shannon O’Shea had lost more than most, and every fiber of my being screamed at me to pull him from the depths of his despair. As the father of my best friend, he’d been there for me when my parents kicked me out for being gay. Now it was my turn. I had to find the answers. I had to rescue him.

The day he asked for a favor and demanded discretion, the plan unfolded before my eyes, and I couldn’t resist the temptation. No names, no faces. He wouldn’t know it was me in the darkness. At the same time, the shackles around my wrists tightened as old enemies slithered back out of the gutters of my city, and my brothers and I were once again on the warpath.

Excerpt:

“I’d rather take a bet on the return of the Italians,” I replied, changing the topic. “Got any news on that front?”

It’d unnerved me when the last car we’d been tracking had ended up at the airport too. It had happened a couple months ago. As far as we knew, there were no Italians left. Which didn’t add up. They didn’t just surrender silently like that. Something was wrong.

“Not a damn word.” It bugged Eric too. “I got a lead, though. That friend of yours—Ghost?—yeah, she found a connection between—”

“Oi!”

I looked over my shoulder and spotted Colm stepping out of his car. The look of concentration and the furrow between his brows told me something was up.

“Don’t look across the street from the parking lot, but we’ve got company,” he said, walking closer.

I stiffened.

“They were parked outside Finn’s office earlier.” Colm reached us and lit up a smoke, acting calm and oblivious. “Brown Chevy, two wop-lookin’ gobshites our age.”

Jesus fucking Christ, they weren’t even supposed to be stateside.

“This is last time all over again,” I responded irritably. “By the time we noticed they were in our city, they were already causing mayhem.” Get Finn to safety, alert the crew bosses, Eric had to be safe too, move the shipment to a better location. My mind started racing, and I was ready to act without Finn’s approval. I did have the power to do so in some cases; I just wasn’t sure he would classify this situation as one of them. “I hope we agree that there’s no way we can let them leave.”

“Definitely,” Colm replied firmly.

Eric positioned himself so he had a better view of the Chevy somewhere behind me. “Only one reason they’d get a rusty old car like that.”

To blend in. Especially in a place like this. Shipyards and warehouses went hand in hand with rust.

So they were here to gather information and remain discreet.

Unless…

Fuck. Fuck!

“Colm, you and I will pick up the chase,” I ordered. “They’ve ambushed us before. We can’t be certain they haven’t planted anything in the warehouse, and right now, Finn is in there.” Because we didn’t have people here all the time.

Colm was in, and he turned to Eric. “Text Connor, black alert.” He spoke of Finn’s driver, and I assumed he was inside. “He knows to get Finn to a safe place instantly. Ye should go with them, mate.” He addressed me next. “Let’s see if we can box ’em in.”

I nodded.

Adrenaline started pumping through my veins as I headed back to my car, where I hurriedly turned on the engine and called Colm from my dashboard. Noticing that Eric wanted to say something, I rolled down the window. Colm accepted the call at the same time with a short, “Standing by.”

“They started the engine,” Eric said. “Connor received the text. We’re good to go.”

Then there was no use in acting like we didn’t know they were there. I revved the engine, backed out quickly, and spun the car around.

I wasn’t gonna stop until they talked this time. The last bastards we’d tracked down, we’d disposed of way too fast.

I flashed the Chevy with my headlights and offered a two-finger salute, and that covered it. They peeled their rusty bag of shit away from the curb, and I tore out of the parking lot to follow.

About Cara

I’m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex.

There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly.

Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve.

I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I’m a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, cooking, baking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and family, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

Miller is entranced by the dancing baker, and when Darius looks up and catches Miller staring, the interest suddenly goes both ways.

Can two strangers find love among the quaint chaos of an Aster Valley Christmas? Even if it includes the two most overwhelming and meddling families vying for the title of greatest matchmakers of all time?

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

                                                                      “A Festive Winter Wonderland”

I enjoyed reading Forever Wilde in Aster Valley, by Lucy Lennox, a story set within a beautiful mountainous winter wonderland, with wonderful main characters and select secondary characters from previous stories, making their own hardy cameos within this particular story.  All coming together for a festive family reunion for family and new friends.  It’s certainly a beautiful story with an underlying heartbreaking yet needy heartwarming undertone.  I tend to gravitate toward stories such as these as they tend to be emotionally addicting, angsty, as well as heartwarmingly satisfying.

Forever Wilde in Aster Valley, was a completely different kind of emotional addiction.  With its beautiful setting and dreamy and delightful main characters, my head actually spun with all of the added components of this story.  Exciting familial times during the holidays are very often an experience to be had, and for this, it was something that had this reader hoping for within a smooth, festive, and, harmonious occasion.  However, it was hidden within all of the hoopla.

As almost like a conglomerate of secondary characters, from previous stories, they all seemed to have their own background and their own direction within this particular storyline.  Regardless of having a background map, it’s all just words if it’s out of context.  It is in this reader’s opinion that they all need to have been experienced prior to this particular story.  Having read a few of them, it was exciting to catch-up with them, despite attempting to adjust to all of the others as it was collectively way too much.

Miller and Darius are amazing characters with deeply richly backgrounds.  I was glued to my kindle to become immersed within these characters.  I loved their developing background, chemistry, and need for one another.  Unfortunately, their relationship and actual development fell short for this reader as it was so hidden beneath the inclusion of the army of secondary characters, and as a result it felt rushed and is in need of more depth and development for a smoother connection.

That all being said, I still enjoyed reading Forever Wilde in Aster Valley, with its gorgeous setting, admirable and dedicated main characters, and a flurry of secondary characters, some of which just did not jive with this reader what-so-ever, the story as a whole was a very good one.  I liked it….:)

BLURB

I left home at eighteen with nothing but the clothes on my back and the bruises on my face.
I worked hard to build a life I was proud of until a simple case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time ripped my world apart.
With my conscience buried in a wooden box beside my wife and daughter, a beast rose from within.
One that fed on the guilty and sated its thirst for vengeance by killing everyone I held responsible.
Over a decade later, when the dust had settled, and all that remains are the ghosts that haunt me, a scared little girl, whose dark history could rival mine, worms her way into my life and my home.
I’m her protector, she’s my ward, but she’s so much more than just that.
She’s my redemption, my salvation, my chance to atone for the blood I’d spilled.
Yet she also tempts the beast within, and after a stolen moment, I’m left with the taste of sin on my lips and a craving for something far sweeter than forgiveness.

                                                    Review:

Tainted Oaths (Collateral Damage, #1)Tainted Oaths by Candice M. Wright

                                                  “A Gripping All-Encompassing Story”

Tainted Oaths, by Candice M. Wright, is an all-encompassing, gigantic story.  A highly emotional, gripping, trigger-infused, mysterious, indescribably hopeful story.  This is a story that took me through the wringer and tossed me around so many times, that, when it seemed that peace was on the horizon, it took me through the wringer yet again.  It is a story that has so much darkness, so much pain and grief, that the desperate light was difficult to see.  But, that light?  Man-oh-man, when it shone….it was brilliant.

This light came by the name of Wyatt Turner.  He was everything.  He was one of those characters that I needed to immediately squeeze-hug him and keep him in my pocket for safe keeping.  I adored him and for this I needed to know everything about him as he was just so worthy of so-much-love.  His story is one that is gut-wrenching, soul searching and absolutely addicting.

Tainted Oaths was so visceral.  Despite not having read any of the previous stories from the Ricochet nor Underestimated Series, I felt like I came in mid-story as it is a continuation of that world.  As a first time reader, the emotional darkness was so prevalent that it took my breath away as it all kept me glued to this deeply encompassing story.

Tainted Oaths was everything.  It’s a story that needs to be absorbed as all of the twists and turns will leave the reader spinning as the juxtaposition of light and dark was staggering.  It has so many triggers that I lost count, and for this, I actually needed to skip through some of the darker moments as they were just way too much.

That all being said, I was also all heart-eyes and gushy-like in between bouts of never-ending inconsolable tears, due to that one moment, that unbelievably breathtaking moment, which was in this reader’s opinion, of the utmost of magnificence.  I also found the writing to be just as realistic due to the inclusion of perfectly placed humor that the dialogue was oddly perfect.

The story contained so many vast and important secondary characters, some just rubbed me the wrong way, but others I found myself scream-cheering for, as not only were they big and mighty bikers, they were also such an integral part of the story.

Tainted Oaths slayed me.  It crushed me.  The storyline, plot and characters were deep and all-absorbing.  With a sense of an on-going storyline, there really is a need to read the aforementioned series.  Not having read them left this reader, at times, confused and frustrated and did keep me from having a completely well-rounded experience with this story.  Even though there is a need for more background information, I also thought some of it felt rushed and slightly unrealistic.  Other than that, it was collectively an amazing story.  I really, really liked it.  🙂

Bad at Love
By Aimee Nicole Walker

BadatLove-f900-web

Bad at making decisions or bad at love? Either way, Kendall Blakemore doesn’t trust his judgment. He falls too hard, too fast, and always for the wrong guy. Needing a major shakeup, Kendall moves into his own place for the first time and seizes a new career opportunity. But everything he thought he wanted turns out to be the last thing he needs. When loneliness threatens to derail Kendall’s good behavior, he decides to rent out his spare bedroom. What could go wrong? Try a tenant who’s temptation incarnate.

Bad at commitment or born to roam? Either way, US Deputy Marshal Kurt Dandridge feels trapped. Maybe staying in one place for too long is the source of his unhappiness, or maybe it’s because he’s engaged to the wrong person. Finding his fiancé in bed with another man takes care of one problem but creates another. Ridge needs a place to live. He’d leave Savannah altogether if not for his vow to apprehend an elusive fugitive. Renting a room from Kendall Blakemore seems like the perfect solution until Ridge finds himself falling for the alluring man. Would one kiss derail his course? And could he stop at just one?

Hurts so good. Chemistry burns between them—hot, consuming, and impossible to ignore. And why should they? Kendall and Ridge are consenting adults who know the score. Being bad has never felt so good, but it’s a slippery slope to navigate. One misstep could have disastrous consequences for both men.

Bad at Love is a standalone novel within the Sinister in Savannah universe where both characters first appeared. It is not necessary to read that series first. Bad at Love is a romantic suspense that’s heavier on the romance than the suspense.

Excerpt:

The man continued to stare intently for a moment before speaking. “What are you doing?”

Kendall returned his scrutiny, noticing the weariness creeping into the handsome guy’s expression. Shrugging, Kendall said, “Hell if I know.” His remark earned him a half smile. “What’s your name?”

“Ridge.”

Kendall quirked a brow. “What a unique name. I think that’s a character in the soap opera my elderly babysitter used to watch.” The comment triggered memories of the simpler times he longed for. Rather than wallow in sadness, Kendall turned all his attention to the handsome stranger mowing through another wing. “Is Ridge a nickname or short for something else?”

Ridge dropped the cleaned bone onto his plate and took a napkin from the pile. He wiped his hands thoroughly but didn’t remove the smear of sauce from his face. “Nickname. My name is Kurt Dandridge, but my friends and family call me Ridge. It’s both a family joke and a shortened version of my last name.”

Kendall planted his elbow on the table and dropped his chin onto his upturned palm. “I’m curious about the family joke part.”

Ridge tilted his head to the side, then looked around the club. “Shouldn’t you be checking on patrons in your section?”

“I’ve already clocked out, so I’m all yours.” A flash of heat washed over him at the montage of suggestions his libido wanted to make. All of them were dirty and delicious but entirely off the table. Damn it. He was about to clear the air in case Ridge thought Kendall had offered himself up as dessert, but Ridge smiled wickedly.

“Good to know,” he said, dropping his gaze to the name tag Kendall still wore. “Sugar, huh?” Ridge picked up another wing and sank his teeth into it. Kendall couldn’t recall a time he’d been so turned on. He wanted the big bruiser to manhandle him like a chicken wing.

Bad at LoveBad at Love by Aimee Nicole Walker

“An Exciting, Humorous, Heartbreaking, Beautifully Heartwarming Story”

Bad at Love, by Aimee Nicole Walker, is by far one of the best books of 2021.  Set as a romantic suspense story, with it’s exquisite cover, it leans more towards a soul-stirring romance.  I crazy loved it, as it’s gripping, emotional, and nail-biting moments kept me on the edge and I knew early on that I would already need more of this addicting story.

It’s suspenseful and heartbreaking plot is filled with persistent demons and down and dirty criminals, cut-off at the path by big and mighty US Marshals who pave the way for honor and justice.  I cheered, I squealed, I laughed my head off, and I actually ugly cried as it was such a over-encompassing read.

Ridge and Kendall were such incredible, cling-worthy, amazing, valiant main characters, each with their own gripping and gut-wrenching past and purpose, that the need for strength and hope could not be felt more as it had been either through the pages of my kindle or through their deep-seated connection.

Gah, I could not get enough of this interconnected story, as the twists and turns, heartbreak, dedication, sizzling heat, and stunning symbolism were spot on.  I so loved it to bits.

Even though it is somewhat of a spin-off from the Sinister in Savannah series, it’s not really necessary to read that series beforehand.  However, it is in this reader’s opinion that, it so really does, because the secondary characters of this particular story were so yummy addicting that those with cameos are bound to have stories that are just as good.

Bad at Love, is an exciting, humorous, soul-stirring, beautiful, incredibly heartwarming story with amazing characters that despite being a bit confusing, at times, collectively was such a fantabulous read.  I really, really liked it….:)

Book Description

You are formally invited to the royal ball…to become the husband to the king!

King Charles of Lysianna needs a husband and fast. He’s up against the biggest time crunch of all—a royal decree stating he must marry or lose the crown. It’s already December and he’s running out of time. Throwing a royal ball to find a suitable man for the role of husband seems like the king’s only option…until he meets Nathan. This royal has always done things his own way—and maybe now it’s time to go rogue.

Nathan Pratt doesn’t want much from life except to raise his son and be happy. Dating isn’t on this single father’s radar until he sees Charles in the castle solarium and his heart goes out to the sad-looking man. Once he meets Charles, he starts to think love might be possible. There’s just the small issue of Charles being the king…

Will Nathan be able to handle the glare of the spotlight with Charles beside him, or will the notoriety that comes with dating a royal be too much?

Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of gunshots as well as the threat of kidnapping. This book is linked to Runaway Royal.

Excerpt

“I’m in charge.” Charlie stared out at the kingdom, admiring the park leading to the hall of government. Snow lay soft on the ground and the land looked crisp but clean. The trees were dusted in bright white and kids played on the grounds of the park, tossing snowballs at one another.

He’d used to toss snowballs—before his father had handed him the keys to the monarchy. He’d become the king. The entirety of Lysianna was now under his protection. He should feel invincible, but he didn’t. To be honest, he didn’t feel like a king.

He was just a man with a fancy crown…and an entire country expecting him to keep order.

“Sire? You have a problem?” Newt, one of the pages, held a document out. “Lord Spencer gave this to me. He’s just finishing up in the other room. According to this, you must be married by end of this year. It’s already December fifth.”

“You’re kidding me.” He wanted to see Spencer right away. Why would his right-hand man send the page in to alert him to this notice? “I thought I had a while.” He’d known about the time limit, but could’ve sworn the deadline was more than thirty days away.

Spencer swept into the room and flicked his fingers to dismiss Newt. “Go.” He waited until Newt left the room, then continued. “You have to be married by the new year. That’s how that rotten woman had the decree worded. You’ve had all year to pick, and now if you don’t choose, the kingdom goes to the next in line.”

“That’s Zara’s little boy, Alistair.” He’d never know why she’d named her child that, but whatever. “Well, shit.”

“What’s worse? You’re supposed to marry a girl. According to this, you need to procreate.” Spencer shook his head. “You’d really think your former stepmother hated your guts.”

“She did.” He leaned back in his office chair. “She wanted nothing more than to ruin my life.” His former stepmother had sworn that he and his sister Zara weren’t right for the crown. She’d wanted to be queen, and when the king had stepped down, she’d lost her connection to the line. She hated her stepchildren and even more that Charlie was gay. Unfortunately, she’d managed to get a decree into the records which stated that Charlie, the current king, needed to not only be married, but to have children.

“What are you going to do?” Spencer asked.

“Nothing yet.” He had no prospects or ideas—just a kingdom to himself. He wasn’t good at being alone. Ever since he’d come out, he’d had a boyfriend. Being with someone made him feel more secure. Except now… He didn’t know what to do.

“We should throw a ball.” Spencer clasped his hands behind his back. “That’s it. A ball to find you a…husband. Would he be the prince? We don’t have co-kings. Duke? That doesn’t feel right.”

“It doesn’t matter, since I don’t have anyone in mind,” Charlie said. “Plan out the ball. I don’t care. I’ve got roughly thirty days to find a husband. It’s only almost impossible.”

“I’m on it.” Spencer picked up his tablet. “We’ll have to fast-track the details, but it’s been done before.”

“A king should be self-assured, not wallowing in self-pity. So I’m alone and being forced to wed?” He stared at Spencer. “I’m the king, right? So I can add an addendum to the decree, correct? Saying that I’m entitled to marry the man I choose, not a woman, since I’m gay?”

“You can. I’ll get the decree written up.” Spencer took his place at his desk. “Won’t be more than a minute to get the words on the parchment.”

Charlie paced the length of the office. He had no business being king. Sure, he could handle passing judgments and thought himself fair, but he wanted to be happy—not just there to mete out justice.

He wanted to be loved in the way Zara had found love with Luke. They were meant for each other and the stuff of fairy tales.

What about him? It’d taken most of the year for the people of the empire to warm up to him being gay and the king. Would they accept him being married to another man? For all he knew, they’d revolt.

Spencer finished writing up the document. “Here. Look this over and sign it if the wording is correct. This addendum should at least give you the right to marry a man. But I should mention, you’ve always been roguish in the way you handle things. This isn’t that far out of normalcy for you. Don’t sweat it.”

“Thanks.” He settled behind his desk and read through the document. If he needed something done fast and correctly, then Spencer was his man.

“So, we’ll have the ball on the twenty-fourth.” Spencer held his tablet again. “You’ll find someone among the attendees, but this gives us a small pad in case you can’t.”

“I suppose.” He signed the document. He should take the reins on the ball and his search for a husband. “For the ball, I want the colors blue and silver. Not Christmas colors. Everyone should attend wearing blue or silver. Advertise it as a Christmas event, not my misadventures in finding a possible husband.”

Spencer nodded. “Understood, but I would brace yourself. Once the pages find out there will be a ball, the speculation will run rampant. Everyone knows you need to find a husband and they’ll try to figure out who it will be.”

“Of course.” He knew the staff liked to gossip. “I don’t like the idea of this forced marriage. It’s unfair.”

“Not if you find a good husband—and you could.” Spencer continued, tapping on his tablet. “It’s a long shot, but it’s possible.”

“How? I don’t have time to meet anyone. I’m busy with affairs of state.” Charlie stared out the window. “How will I know that the man I’ve met at the ball will be the right one? After one night? It’s ludicrous. For all I know, the guy is just trying to get money from the family.”

“I know,” Spencer said. “I’m glad your father divorced your former stepmother, because all she wanted was to see you fail. She was determined to have the Earl of Lender take over as king. Now, because of her, he believes he’s owed the position.”

“I know.” He wasn’t a fan of Lender. People who wanted something for nothing drove him berserk. Lender had married to get his title, bought his position in government, paid off individuals to keep from getting sued after he left office disgraced and had still managed to con the former queen into helping him attempt to gain a position in the line of succession. Lender didn’t belong there. Charlie sighed again. “Here’s to hoping that I find someone before we get to the point where Lender thinks he’s got a chance.”

“Agreed.” Spencer stopped tapping. “You need to go to the solarium now. It’s almost time for the interview with Media Magazine. They want to take your photo first, but they wanted something informal.”

“They don’t want me walking around in the snow? I assumed they’d want me to be strolling through the park or something.” The magazine had a certain look for their photos and most included formality.

“No, they want you to look relaxed.” Spencer tucked the tablet to his chest. “They want to discuss you being on the throne.”

“It’s boring.” He snorted. “What else do I say? It’s thrilling?” He left his seat and gestured to the door. “Let’s go.” He made his way through the castle to the solarium at the west end of the building. The camera crew had already set up the shot and the brunette interviewer stood next to the oversized carved chair. Her pantsuit swathing her body in crimson, she drummed her fingers on the back of the chair.

Charlie sighed. He didn’t mind the publicity aspect of his role, but he hated answering the same questions over and over. Besides that, everyone wanted to know about his sister. So why not ask her to sit for the interview? She was quite approachable and happy now that she’d married Luke, had Alistair and settled into life as a mother.

Spencer directed Charlie to the main chair. “They insisted you sit here. Not the throne.”

“Why?”

“It looks royal,” Spencer replied.

He rolled his eyes, then pasted a smile on his lips. “Very well.”

“King Charles.” The interviewer gasped, then bowed. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Lady Teresa Bushe and I’m humbled to be in your presence.”

“I’m honored you’ve chosen me for the interview. You didn’t need to set up such a posh space. I’m a simple man.” He nodded to her. “Shall we?”

“Yes.” She gestured to the fancy chair. “First, let’s get the photos, then we can chat.”

“Of course.” He’d done a dozen of these interviews. Every magazine and paper wanted a report on his ‘hot bachelor king status’. He didn’t see the big deal. He didn’t have a significant other because the right one hadn’t come along. That didn’t mean he couldn’t rule. It just meant he wasn’t getting any.

He suffered through the interview and expected the woman to bring up his string of ex-boyfriends. Until his father had stepped down as king, Charlie hadn’t expected to become the leader so soon. He’d thought he had time to play the field and find a husband properly.

He listened to the woman chatter, but the view out of the windows caught his attention. A man and a little boy were walking along the brick path leading past the solarium. Charlie wondered who the man was and why they hadn’t met before. He knew the little boy—Heather Dawn’s son, Emmett. The child wasn’t the best at reading and Charlie recalled being told the boy needed tutoring to get up to his grade level. Was this man the tutor? Or Heather Dawn’s new boyfriend? She had two young boys and Charlie couldn’t imagine being a parent.

The man, though, caught Charlie’s attention. The coat covered his frame, but he appeared trim and Charlie liked the way the slight winter breeze caught in his dark hair. He had a thing for dark, brooding and handsome men. Was this one brooding?

“Do you believe you’ll find a husband before the deadline?” Lady Teresa asked. “Are you aware Lender believes he’s next in line to the throne?”

Shit. He needed to pay attention and not watch the guy outside. “I’m confident I’ll find someone, although I believe this decree to be out of date. A ruler should be permitted to choose a worthy partner on his or her own timeframe.”

“And Lender?” she asked.

“Has no connections to the crown. He’s not in line.” Not if he had anything to say about it.

Spencer nodded behind her. “Is that your last question? The king is very busy and needs to attend to the planning of the Christmas Ball.”

“One more,” she said. “What would you like to tell our readers and your loyal subjects? Any words of wisdom?”

“Yes, I appreciate every one of my subjects and I’m endeavoring to do what’s best for all of them. We are a proud nation and should be proud to be of the kingdom of Lysianna. I am both humble and proud to be your leader and hope to be for many years to come.” God, he needed to work on his speaking skills.

“Thank you.” She stood and shook hands with him. “It’s a pleasure to have interviewed you. So easy.”

“You’re welcome here any time. Thank you for interviewing me.” He stood and watched the team pick up the gear. At least she hadn’t begged him to pose in his crown.

He waited until the crew and interviewer had left, then settled on the chair again. “Spence? Anything else? I need a break.”

Spencer checked the tablet. “You have a meeting with the planning commission for the Christmas festivities. They wish to show you the itinerary for the royal celebrations and will want to incorporate the ball into their plans. They’ve got in mind a rather large bash for the New Year portion of the celebrations.”

“Of course.” He folded his arms and looked out of the window again. “Who is the guy with Emmett? Is he new?”

“Him?” Spencer rubbed his chin. “That’s Nathan Pratt. He works as a tutor and with archives. Seems bright and fair. I’m not sure if he’s gay, but I was told he’d used a surrogate to have his son. The surrogate is one of your subjects, so since the child is half-Lysiannan, Nathan was permitted to live here as he raised the boy.” He eyed Charlie. “Do you wish to meet him?”

“Maybe.” He wasn’t sure if he wanted to make a move. Still, Nathan was handsome in a faraway manner. He must be decent enough with kids if he had one. But would he be dazzled by Charlie’s role as the king and not genuine?

One of the stewards brought in coffee and snacks.

“Thank you,” Charlie said and smiled. “How are you, Cort?”

The steward blushed before he blushed. “I’m well, your highness.”

Charlie clasped his hands together. Cort couldn’t be more than eighteen and looked every bit the young man he had to be. “I have a question. Are you happy here?” He knew Cort’s name, but not much else about him. “To be working for the crown?”

“Will I get sent to the gallows if I answer wrong?” The color drained from Cort’s face. “I’m not supposed to talk to you, am I? And this is a test?”

“You may speak to me,” Charlie said. “I enjoy your company. Feel free to talk to me whenever you like.”

“Wow.” Cort stood tall and clasped his hands together. “You’re nicer than I was told.”

“Who told you I’m mean? No one will die if you’re honest.” Charlie picked up the cup of coffee. “Tell me.”

“Cook. She said you’re grumpy.”

“Only at five in the morning.” He laughed. “Thank you for your honesty and the coffee. I’ll return the cups later. You’re dismissed.”

“Yes, my king.” Cort tripped over his feet as he left the room.

“Nice kid.” Charlie leaned on the chair. “So young and impressionable.”

“They get younger every day,” Spencer said. “He’s a bit young for you.”

“Spence? Seriously?” He crinkled his nose. “I’d like someone closer to my age. Are there any men, late-twenties or early thirties, single and looking to be with a man who wants love, tenderness and a partner? Find that for me and we’ll talk.”

“It gives me a better idea as to what to look for.” Spencer abandoned the tablet on the tray. “Do you want to meet Nathan?”

“He’s got a kid?” Charlie asked. “I wouldn’t turn down someone who happened to be a father.”

“You’re kidding.” Spencer snorted. “What about who will inherit the throne?”

“It’ll be Alistair. That’s already been arranged.” He didn’t see the big deal. “Look, I haven’t found anyone yet and we still have to plan the gala or ball—that the interviewer already knew about. I thought we’d just decided on it.”

“I let her know while you were getting your picture taken.” Spencer shrugged. “It’s going to come out sooner than later.”

“True,” Charlie said. “Focus on the ball.”

“Very good,” Spencer replied. “I’ll be right back.”

Charlie sank onto the carved chair and sighed. What Spencer didn’t understand was that he wanted to find someone. He didn’t want to be lonely, but he needed to find the right person.

He gazed out of the window at Nathan. He had no idea if they’d be compatible or if Nathan would even want to date a king. He might not even be gay. The unknowns didn’t mean Charlie couldn’t gawk at him and consider what could be.

He was a king and deserved a fairy-tale ending, right?

Rogue RoyalRogue Royal by Megan Slayer

                                                    A Recommended Modern Fairytale

Rogue Royal, by Megan Slayer, is a modern tale, of sorts, about a young new king and a down-to-earth commoner and the ways in which both men come to realize the other is exactly what they had been searching for all along and didn’t even know it.  With this discovery comes their very own little fairytale….

A fairytale with lots of intrigue, mystery, angst, and dreamy heartwarming moments that lead the way for such an addicting story.  A story containing a plot with so many twists and turns that kept me on the edge-of-my-seat throughout this read.  With a need to abide by a specific decree in order to maintain the familial crown and a tricky plot with varied characters, many came to its call for many different reasons.  A call that would pave the way for a semi-fake relationship, companionship, love, trust, greed, power, and, newly formed friends and family.

EEEP!  I really liked the main characters, Nathan and Charlie.  Nathan a single hard working father and Charlie a new contemporary king with a whole lot of pressure on his shoulders.  While it took this reader a bit longer to get on board with one of these characters, ultimately both were great individuals.  Both on a mission to prove their initially fake but necessary relationship was actually made in the stars for them both.

I enjoyed Rogue Royal, with it’s great storyline of king meets commoner who form their own small family having fought their way through unspeakable angst.  My kind of story.  However.  Even though its premise is a great one, there had existed some bumps along the way.  No pun intended.  With it’s initial slow pace, an intermittently confusing plot, a need for more character background, depth and development, and a need for more editing due to various typos, I needed more from this story.  That all being said, however again, it all came together as a really great read.   Despite these needs, I really enjoyed it, as a whole, as the storyline, characters, and end result were all components of a recommended modern fairytale.

EXCERPT

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Everything is black. Where am I?
All I feel is pain. It’s like my entire abdomen is on fire inside. Burning. Burning. Burning.
When I try to open my eyes, I just can’t. I don’t seem to have any control over my body. Even my arm doesn’t want to move when I try to lift it.
I’m trapped. Trapped in my own body, but I can still hear everything that’s happening around me.
The door opens and someone walks in. I can hear quiet footsteps padding across the floor getting louder as they approach me. A soft hand takes mine and the person delicately entwines our fingers before a gentle kiss is planted on my forehead.
Suddenly, it all feels so very familiar. I know who this is. I recognize the feeling of her lips against my skin. I recognize her distinctive smell. I recognize the only girl who has never given up on me. The only woman who wouldn’t let herself be pushed away when I put up my walls. No matter how many times I tried, she always came back into my life. And that is exactly why I love her.
I may not be able to open my eyes to see her right now, but I know what she looks like. Every inch of her face is etched into my mind. Every freckle, every dimple, every little detail that makes her her is clear as day in my head.
Picturing her makes me want to scream from the rooftops about how much I love her. She means everything to me. She’s my fucking world, and I can’t even tell her that. No matter how hard I try.
When I hear her starting to cry softly, I go crazy inside. But none of my limbs want to work. I can’t seem to find my voice, and my eyelids feel like they’ve been glued shut.

Hang on a little longer, baby. I will wake up!

The words keep repeating in my mind. I know she can’t hear them, but I’m hoping that I can somehow beam them from my brain into hers if I try hard enough. It might sound insane, but I’m that desperate.
A tear drops onto my arm and slides down, then she lifts my hand to her mouth and brushes her lips across my knuckles.
“Come back to me, Mike,” she whispers.
Rage and frustration unlike anything I’ve ever known rushes through me when I hear those words. There’s nothing I want more than to pull her close and tell her I’ll be okay. That I’m right here. But I can’t.

Fight for me, Karen! Don’t give up on me now.

I will wake up and be there for you, no matter what it takes. And then, I will never let you go.

This is mine and Karen’s story. It’s been a bumpy road so far and she’s been forced to be patient, but we found each other eventually.

This is how I, Mike Jones, fell in love with Karen even when I thought I would never love again.

Love at Fourth Sight
By Ariella Zoelle

Fourth 1800x2700

Suite Dreams, Book 3

When Luca’s job brings him to a small town for business, he quickly discovers the magic of falling in love with a feisty local.

Luca Revello

As someone who grew up in the city, I experience some culture shock when I travel to the picturesque, small town of Wintervale to help an older couple launch their new ski resort. While almost everyone warmly welcomes me, I seem to rub the owners’ son the wrong way. While Albie seems determined to chase me away, his feisty nature makes him irresistible to me, despite our fifteen year age difference.

It may not be love at first sight, but by the fourth time we meet, I feel like I’m starring in my very own romantic comedy with Albie. Can the magic of a small town bring us a happily ever after worthy of the best schmoopy movies?

Albie Farnese

I want to hate Luca with everything I have. An outsider like him should have no business telling my family how to run our business. But instead of the stuffy, obnoxious know-it-all I expect to show up, Luca has the audacity to be charming, handsome, hilarious, and ridiculously perfect, making it impossible to hate him. Ugh, he’s such a jerk.

If I can’t hate him, I guess that means I have to love him for being the living embodiment of my dream boyfriend. The man even bakes like a master pastry chef! Who could resist a baking god? Certainly not me. Honestly, his only flaw is not being a permanent resident of Wintervale. But I can be very persuasive when it comes to getting what I want, so why should I let that pesky little detail stop us from being together?

Love at Fourth Sight is the third book in the Suite Dreams series and part of the Sunnyside universe. This novel features a small-town, age gap, instalove, opposites attract romance. If you love cute sweetness, sexy fun, and no angst stories that will make you laugh and swoon, you’ll enjoy this satisfying HEA without cliffhangers. Each book can be read as a standalone or as part of the series in order.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1: Albie Farnese

As he got closer, I noticed the man was gorgeous. Tall, with a lean swimmer’s build and broad shoulders, his chiseled features were enough to cause anyone to swoon. His dark hair was cut short, and he had just the right amount of scruff to give me inappropriate thoughts about a guest. After all, I had a strict rule about never getting involved with someone staying with us at our hotel. I couldn’t help but be a little awed that somebody so attractive had such an easygoing, friendly smile as he approached me. When he stopped in front of me, I thought my heart would fly out of my chest and into his arms.

“Clarence tells me you’re Albie,” he said in a baritone voice that sent shivers through me.

“Uh-huh” was the only thing I could get out in my stupefied state as I stared up at him in awe. Was some fairy-tale kingdom missing its Prince Charming? Because there was no way the man could be real.

His full lips turned up in amusement as he grew playful. “He also mentioned you would take good care of me.”

The innuendo in his voice cranked the blast furnace inside of me to a roaring blaze. I couldn’t stop myself from saying the first thought that popped into my mind. “Oh, I’d be happy to take very good care of you.”

His pleased smile was more dazzling than the sun coming out after a long, gray winter. “Then I think we’ll get along nicely.”

“I hope so.”

He turned his attention to the building, looking up at it with an impressed expression. Our hotel was stunning, with a stone-and-wood exterior and sloping roofs that gave it a high-end lodge feeling, while the interior was all modern luxury. “This place is more beautiful than in the photos online.”

“It really is. Pictures don’t do it justice.” I puffed up with pride before I remembered my hotel manners. Getting off the bench, I gestured for him to follow me. “Let’s get you inside and checked in. Where are you coming from?”

“Palomina, California,” he replied as he fell into step beside me. “Something tells me I’ll be a lot happier here, though.”

“We’ll guarantee it.” I led him over to the front desk, which was made from beautifully stacked stones and black slate. “This is my sister, Adeline. She’ll check you in.”

She was shameless as she looked him over with a pleased smile. “I’ll be happy to take care of anything else you might need, too.”

“That’s great to hear since I’m planning on being here for a while.”

I chided myself over my first reaction being pleasure over having the chance to get to know him. When hotel guests were off-limits, I had no business getting my hopes up about him.

“Well, we’ll just have to take extra-special care of you in that case.”

He chuckled in amusement before he pulled out his wallet to give her his ID and credit card. “This is definitely the most hospitable welcome I’ve received at a hotel in a long time.”

My sister’s eyebrows shot up in surprise as she looked at his driver’s license. I wondered if maybe he had a funny name until she spoke the words I least wanted to hear. “I can’t tell you how happy we are that you’re here, Mr. Revello.”

“Please, call me Luca.”

It felt like someone had doused me in freezing cold water and left me outside in a windy blizzard. My temper flared over him having the audacity to be so charming and gorgeous when he was here to ruin everything. He was supposed to be a weaselly bastard with no sense of humor, wearing fancy wingtip shoes that he’d bust his ass on the ice with. How dare he show up looking like a guy I’d love to curl up in front of a fire with and sip spiced hot chocolate with! That took some real fucking nerve.
