Review: Bad Boy BluesBad Boy Blues by Saffron A. Kent
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Bad Boy Blues (ARC) was graciously provided to me by Give Me Books PR for an honest review. I have voluntarily read this book and have provided my honest opinion.

A Top 2019 Read

An absolutely mind-blowing, multi-layered, deeply-emotional read has just brought this reader to her knees as the sheer excellence of this new read is profoundly one-of-the-best and has left this reader bowing down to such an author, as a feat such as this is rare and for this has left a need for more from this author.

Bad Boy Blues, by Saffron A. Kent, is quite possibly one of the top books read in 2019.  The amount of deeply interconnected, realistic, and highly-emotional moments have left me in a heightened state of utter amazement, as the writing had this humanistic ability to draw me in to such a heart-breaking read, and has left me stunned at how it all was successfully combined with such utter beauty as well.

Bad Boy Blues was unlike anything I have ever read.  Its storyline is an emotional yet beautiful one, with a plot with plentiful difficult-to-read moments interspersed with gorgeous and deeply rooted symbolism as well, with characters who drew a universe of emotions out of me as I read.

Gah..there are so many reasons why I loved this story like crazy.. Its gripping, heart-breaking, highly-emotional, electrifyingly erotic, as well as other worldly kind of heart-warming moments, that had me either attempting to reach out and grab and protect individuals, numb with shock, bawling, or, needing to squeeze hug someone(s) continuously. The writing was incredible as it enabled me to be thoroughly immersed within the depth and overall beauty of the storyline, with all of the deeply moving and extremely realistic moments. The characters were plentiful and written perfectly, as each of them were their own entities as each of them had a strong and necessary purpose within the story.

Bad Boy Blues, by Saffron A. Kent, is one of those books that surprised the heck out of me as I really began reading without having any kind of premonition of what I was in for, and..wow..was I blown away.  For this, I highly-recommend this book as I absolutely loved it..:)

“Another amazing book… I truly loved this book from start to finish. ALL. THE. FEELS!! ~ Nancy Metsch

“This is simply a beautifully written, wonderful, heartwarming second chance love story that really made me FEEL. ~Marybeth

We pulled up to Tornado Alley bar, and Cole’s truck was there along with a dozen others. “Are you sure this is a good idea?” I asked, glancing around at all the cars. “There’s a lot of people here.”

Bennett parked his truck and pulled out the key. “Yep. A lot of our high school buddies will be in there. They’ll be excited to see the famous movie director, Aubrey Reynolds.” He winked, and it gave me hope. If I could get him on my side, I had to believe I could convince Cole too. He reached over and opened my door. “If you don’t want to go in there with everyone, I’ll bring him out.”

Hands shaking, I nodded as my whole body started to tremble with nerves. “That sounds better. I don’t want to go in there just yet.”

Bennett sighed. “All right. I’ll bring him out.”

He got out of the truck and disappeared inside. Slowly, I exited the truck and walked toward the steps. My legs felt so heavy I doubted I could even climb up them. This was it. It was the moment I’d been dreading, yet looking forward to. I’d dreamed about the time I’d see Cole again, face to face. I already knew it wouldn’t be an easy meeting, especially considering how Bennett’s first encounter with me was.

Everything moved in slow motion as I waited for Cole to come outside. I stood at the bottom of the steps, feeling more vulnerable with each passing second. What if he saw me and then turned right back around? Getting him to hear me out wasn’t going to be easy.

“Oh my God, I can’t do this.” Heart racing out of control, I dashed to the side of the building. I peeked my head around the corner just as the door opened and Cole stepped out. I flattened myself against the wall so he couldn’t see me, and I was almost certain he’d hear me hyperventilating.

“What exactly did you want me to see?” Cole asked, laughing at Bennett. It was clear he’d had a couple of drinks already. “There’s nothing out here.” Hearing his voice brought up all sorts of emotions inside me. I’d missed him so much.

Bennett huffed, most likely thinking I ran off. “Never mind, brother. My mistake.”

Cole chuckled. “Come on, I’ll buy you a drink.”

I jumped out from beside the building, and Bennett stopped. “Wait,” I called out. Cole had his back to me, but he froze and turned around slowly. The second our eyes locked, nothing else existed. It was what I’d secretly hoped for. He might hate me, but there was no denying the bond we had. I felt the spark between us even now.

Synopsis

At age eighteen, when they become marriageable, all royal children in the Thousand Kingdoms must either go questing to rescue another royal or be hidden away to await rescue themselves. Some go the traditional route of princes rescuing princesses, but not all princes want to be rescuers…and some would rather rescue other princes.

Then there’s Prince Gerald, who has no interest in getting married at all. When he refuses to choose a role as either rescuer or rescuee, his royal parents choose for him and have him magicked away to a distant tower to await a spouse.

Gerald, however, is having none of it. He recruits his guardian dragon and a would-be rescuer and soon the trio is dashing to all corners of the united kingdoms on a quest to overturn the entire system.

Gerald followed the steward to the study wearing an expression that would have been more appropriate if he were being led to the dungeon. The steward rapped on the door twice before opening it and stepping aside for Gerald. She gave the young man an encouraging wink, but he was too intent on bracing himself for the upcoming confrontation to notice.

He took a deep breath, visibly set his shoulders and stepped through the doorway. The steward closed the door behind him, and Gerald fought back the feeling of being trapped.

“Don’t lurk in the doorway,” an imposing voice scolded. “Come in where I can see you.”

Gerald did as he was told, stopping and giving a shallow bow when the woman came into view. She nodded, acknowledging the courtesy, which caused the sunlight streaming in through the window to catch and reflect off her golden crown.

Gerald resisted the urge to reach up and touch his own circlet—silver—which he too late realized was probably once again askew.

“Well?” the Queen asked. “Have you made your decision?”

Another deep breath, another forceful straightening of his shoulders, and Gerald said, a hint of defiance in his tone, “I have.”

The Queen’s harsh expression broke into a smile. “Oh, Gerald, thank goodness. Your mum and I were about at our wits’ end! There’s barely enough time left to make all the arrangements. So, what will it be? Rescuer or rescuee?”

“Neither.”

The smile melted off the Queen’s face. “Neither! Don’t be ridiculous, Gerald. You said you had made your decision.”

“I have,” he said, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “I’ve decided not to participate.”

“That is not an option,” she said coldly, the warmth in her voice gone the same way as the smile. “As you are well aware.”

“I don’t wish to marry,” Gerald replied, trying to match her tone but not quite managing it. “As you are well aware.”

The Queen waved her hand dismissively. “This is merely the first step. It may take a year or even two for you to rescue—or be rescued by—someone who appeals. Then there’s the courtship, the inter-kingdom negotiations, planning the festivities…why, unless it’s True Love and you two want to rush things, I doubt the wedding will happen before you turn twenty-one.”

“I didn’t say ‘I don’t wish to marry in the next three years’,” Gerald said, forcing himself to keep his voice level even as he balled his hands into fists. “I said, ‘I don’t wish to marry.’ As in, ever.”

But the Queen was no longer listening.

“I really don’t know where we went wrong with you,” she said. “We never had this sort of problem with your older siblings or even your twinling…”

“Don’t call her that,” Gerald snapped. “You know how much I hate that—we’re not twins, we’re not even sort-of twins. We’re half-siblings at best and maybe not even related at all.”

The Queen looked up at the ceiling as if imploring it to give her strength. “Now you’re being deliberately obtuse,” she snapped back. “You know very well that the term ‘twinling’ has been in use for at least a century throughout every single one of the Thousand Kingdoms, and it’s a perfectly apt word. You’re acting like your mum and I made it up to irritate you. You’re acting like a child, Gerald.”

“Isn’t the point of all this that I am a child?” he responded. “Isn’t the entire purpose of this whole charade of rescue and marriage to make me into an adult?”

“It’s hardly a charade. It’s—”

“—a well-respected, long-established tradition to encourage young royals to broaden their horizons, explore more of the Thousand Kingdoms, find love, and forge stronger connections among the Kingdoms, yes, yes, I know,” Gerald interrupted. “I still say it’s a charade. It’s perfectly possible to accomplish all of those goals without forcing every royal into a ridiculous marriage quest the moment they turn eighteen.”

“You seem to be forgetting something very important here, Gerald,” the Queen said calmly.

“What’s that?”

“This isn’t optional.”

“You can’t force me to choose,” Gerald said. “Why can’t you leave me be and let Lila broaden her horizons, explore the Kingdoms, forge alliances, and all that rot? She wants to.”

“You have ten days,” the Queen continued, as if Gerald hadn’t spoken. She turned away without even bothering to dismiss him.

Synopsis

Dr. Grady Hunter has a vampire infestation on his hands in the town of Shady Pines, but he’s been deserted by those best suited to help. After enlisting Chris Reed, a techno-mage, they find the vampires might only be the tip of a deadly iceberg.

Returning home from his dream travels, Ethan Roam is eager to experiment with his newly discovered powers. But Ethan isn’t the only familiar arrival in Grady’s life. As more reminders of his dark past crop up, Grady and Ethan are swept up in a mystery of cosmic proportions.

Grady must fight to keep an ever-evolving Ethan on his side while being challenged by the ghosts of his past.

Excerpt

The old park in Shady Pines was the stuff of nightmares. Or so it would seem to anyone who happened upon the derelict area after the sun set. In actuality, it was simply a park. Located across from the oldest district in the small Texas city of Shady Pines and near the edge of a small forest encompassing the town, the park was extremely rundown and typically abandoned during the daytime. A snapshot of times past, the neglected playground had standard metal slides and jungle gyms, before modern worries of bruises, broken bones, and burns on hot afternoons. Like most cities, Shady Pines had since created newer and safer places for families to gather. And so, the old park had fallen to ruin but still remained hopeful its ghosts would return to play again.

As it happened, quite a few creatures loved to play there, but they were rarely of the human set. Part of what made the place so eerie was park’s location. Once sunset arrived, a thick fog would roll in from the marshes in the woods and overtake the area. If one were to stand there, as Dr. Grady Hunter was doing now, the murky haze would only rise to roughly one’s waist depending on their height. The moon would hang bright and looming overhead, as it also was now, to cast shadows all around. And a breeze would cause swings to sway, and the paint chipped merry-go-round to spin ever so slightly, as was also happening now. At least, one would hope the movement was due to the breeze. Unless, of course, the person was Dr. Grady Hunter and was hoping for something else.

“Any signs of movement? Blast this fog!” Grady, a semi-former monster hunter and more recently self-appointed alternative healer of supernaturals, whispered into the small microphone on the headset he was wearing. His British accent was always strongest when he was frustrated. The park wasn’t his first choice of venue to lure vampires, but any abandoned buildings or dark alleys would provide them too much of an advantage and surely seem like a setup. They would definitely be suspicious. He supposed they should be suspicious of a man in his late thirties strolling through the old park at night alone but, as the case happened, they appeared to find that behavior completely normal.

“Nada. And don’t worry about the fog. The visuals I’m pulling from my cameras penetrate right through it.” A casually confident, and extremely American in contrast, male voice replied back from the other side of the communication device between sounds of chewing.

“Are you eating right now? We’re working!” Grady admonished, still in a whisper as he slowly strolled through the park with his hand hovering by his waist. He had a number of weapons at the ready beneath his long brown coat in case he was successful in finding what he was looking for.

“Please, I’m the king of multitasking. Besides, it’s past my dinnertime and I can’t refuse a sushi place if I pass one,” the voice responded. Grady could tell the man on the other side, Chris Reed, was smiling. Then, he became urgent. “Ahab, you’ve got a white whale at ten o’clock.”

“That’s not my code name. We don’t have code names. Don’t make things up on the spot. It’s distracting,” Grady griped but whipped around to face whatever was heading his way.

“If we did, though, I think I’d want to be Zaphod,” Chris replied, obviously slurping a drink. “Your target is hovering by the slide. Not the loopy one. The tall straight one. I fell off a slide once when I was a kid. I was pretending to be Indiana Jones. Broke my wrist. Great summer.”

“Your lifelong aspiration to be fictional characters is both charming and annoying. Going silent now,” Grady replied as he stalked slowly in the direction of the slide. He reached inside his jacket for a stake. He saw a figure’s shadow wavering across the top of the fog. It definitely appeared human, which most likely meant it was a vampire. He tried to keep his weapon concealed beneath the haze and pretended he was simply walking in the same direction, unaware of the creature’s presence.

“Whip out the big boy! It’s an ambush from behind!” Chris shouted in his ear. Unable to keep from chuckling, he added, “That didn’t come out how I meant. But seriously, you’re under attack. “

Grady immediately switched to a revolving handheld crossbow, which was loaded with a round of stakes, should a situation such as this ever arise. He spun on his heel in time to see four vampires running full speed in his direction. He shot one down but then had to momentarily turn his attention back to the first vampire, who had taken the opportunity to pounce on him.

Grady wrestled free of his grip and knocked him onto the slide where he toppled over the edge and onto the ground.

“Yeah, pretty much how I broke my wrist,” Chris commented.

“Oh, do shut up!” Grady shouted back in the mic. The outburst caused some mild confusion for the vampires as none of them had been speaking, but it didn’t deter them from continuing their attack.

Two of the vampires lifted Grady and slammed him into the ground on his back, knocking the wind out of him. He felt a cracking pain he didn’t have time to assess, as one of the vampires straddled his chest and went fangs-first for his neck. He managed to pull the revolver up to the creature’s chest and let loose a stake right before he was torn into. He rolled free, still with three vampires to face and precisely three stakes left in his crossbow.

“This is exciting. You’re doing a great job, boss!” Chris complimented.

“Not! Helpful!” Grady panted as he attempted to catch his breath. He didn’t get much of a break as another vampire grabbed him by the shoulder and jerked his arm backward, trying to rip the crossbow from his grasp. Grady shouted in response to the wrenching pain.

“Keep him there!” Chris commanded. “I can get a shot in. He’s right in the line of fire.”

“I’m not the one in control at the moment, thank you!” Grady grieved between gritted teeth as he tried to maintain control of the weapon against the thrashing pull of the vampire. Thankfully, the vampire on the other side of the slide was only now running over to try to help his cohort, and the third had opted to watch the scene rather than participate.

A wild shot seemed to fly in out of nowhere. Grady knew the attack came from one of the cameras they had placed around the park for their mission. Attached to the bottom of each supernatural night vision camera was a small loaded device that would shoot a stake with bullet-like precision when activated. It was one of the many weapons they’d had to develop and utilize in the past few months as the vampire infestation in Shady Pines had progressively gotten worse and Grady found himself without much help in dealing with the problem.

Ethan Roam, his new partner in both work and life—who happened to be a sandman, was still away dream traveling. Benny, weredog and roommate, was living the high life as a spoiled Chihuahua fifty percent of the time, rendering him practically ineffective. Vivian Edwards, a highly skilled witch and his former secretary, refused to speak to him or respond to any of his messages. Ethan’s mother, Karen Roam, and their mutual friend, Dr. Arthur Ellis, were eager to help. However, while they were fine comrades in research, they were useless in the field. Grady had no choice but to call upon an old acquaintance to help with the crisis. Chris Reed, a rogue hunter and techno-mage. Thankfully, Chris was more than capable and equally enthusiastic at the prospect. He enjoyed inventing new ways to destroy and capture supernatural creatures, and he’d decided working with Grady was a fantastic way to demo his creations. Unfortunately, even with Chris’s handiwork and help, they hadn’t made much of a dent in the vampire population, which was rapidly growing and terrorizing the citizens (and other paranormals) who generally enjoyed a night out from time to time.

The shot hit the vampire perfectly, and Grady fell forward onto his knees, free of the monster’s grasp. This, however, caused the crossbow to fly free from the ended struggle and fall into the fog. Grady couldn’t see where the weapon landed and began swearing. Knowing he had only moments, he reached back into his jacket and produced two khukuri knives. He stood quickly, ready to face the vampire who had been standing by watching, but was surprised to find he’d disappeared.

“Bugger! One escaped. Did you see where he went?” Grady asked into the mic as he rounded on the last vampire, already furiously leaping toward him.

“Dammit! No. I’m sorry,” Chris replied. “I had my eye on my shot.”

Grady pulled up the khukuri knives on either side of the vampire’s throat as the creature attempted to attack him. The vampire’s eyes grew wide in surprise, realizing he was about to be beheaded. He met Grady’s gaze in a pleading manner. Grady hated when they did that. It made him think of Dacey Sinnett, the only vampire he’d ever call a friend, and he suddenly felt sick to his stomach. Grady did his best to keep his resolve.

“Tell me who is leading you, or I will end you right now!” Grady demanded, his expression ferociously serious.

“You’ll do it anyway,” the vampire spat back.

Grady shoved his weight forward and slammed him up against the slide, blades tightly gripped around the vampire’s neck.

“Your cooperation may convince me otherwise. Now answer the question!” he commanded again.

“You’re great at playing bad cop, Grady,” Chris interjected in his ear. Once again, he practically heard him grinning. Grady wished he could rip his headset off but right now his hands were full.

“I don’t know his name,” the vampire played along. “He showed up out of nowhere a few months ago. Started making promises and threats; demanding that we help him.”

“Help him with what?” Grady seized the opportunity to gather much-needed information. “And is he a vampire? A human? Something else?”

“He wants us to tear this pathetic town to pieces until we find—” The vampire’s answer was forever halted as he was hit expertly with a stake.

“Dammit! Chris, was that you?” Grady yelled angrily.

“No!” Chris was defensive. Grady stood, with no vampire left to interrogate, and looked around. He saw the source at the same time Chris must have on the cameras.

“Guess he found your crossbow,” Chris sighed limply as the last vampire, the one who had gone missing, ran off into the night after killing their only chance at finding some answers.

Grady kicked the slide in frustration which caused a metallic gong to echo around the now empty park. They weren’t any closer to dealing with the problem or having any real answers.

“Sorry tonight was a bust, man,” Chris consoled.

“Same story, different night,” Grady sighed. He brushed off as much dirt and grass from his jacket and pants as possible and attempted to calm his frustrations.

“Don’t worry, tiger. We’ll get them one of these days.” Chris was already back to his upbeat self. “If it’s any consolation, you looked like a total badass. I have to admit, watching you fight has to be my second favorite thing about this gig.”

“Oh, really? And what’s the first?” Grady smirked. Chris didn’t let anyone feel down for too long.

“The inevitable moments where I get to save your ass, of course,” Chris chimed.

“Prat.” Grady rolled his eyes but smiled anyway as he headed back through the park toward his old Jaguar.

“Twat,” Chris responded without missing a beat. Grady chuckled. If nothing else, at least having Chris around kept up morale.

“Go ahead and take the rest of the night off,” Grady said, getting into his vehicle. He glanced back at the park once more, in case he missed something, but the area remained quiet and empty. “I suppose Benny already went home?”

“Yeah, he left a while back. He said watching would make him nervous. And to be honest, I’m not much of a fan of small yapping dogs,” Chris replied. Grady heard him shutting off various equipment in the background.

“All right. See you tomorrow, then.” Grady turned off the headset and tossed the device into the passenger seat. He leaned back into the headrest and closed his eyes, inhaling deeply and slowly letting his breath back out.

“Find. What could they possibly want to find so badly in Shady Pines?” Grady asked himself aloud as he recalled what the vampire tried to tell him. The pit of his stomach tightened and his heart grew heavy because he had a pretty good idea of what, or whom, that might be.

He brought the car to life and drove straight home, feeling the need to be at Ethan’s sleeping side.

Review:

Fallen Princess (Wind Dragons MC, #7)

Fallen Princess (Wind Dragons MC, #7) (ARC) was graciously provided to me by Give Me Books PR for an honest review. I have voluntarily read this book and have provided my honest opinion.

An Exciting and Addicting Ride

An absolutely addicting, and, beyond exciting ride with so many surprising twists and turns had this reader deeply captivated with an exceptionally riveting upcoming read, and, for this, highly-recommends this new addition to such a gripping series.  This new read will entice, and, quite possibly convert, those new to the MC World, while at the same time remind current readers why this genre is right up there as one of the most enthralling and immensely exciting ones for all to immerse themselves in and be able to experience one of the best rides imaginable and quickly return for more.

Fallen Princess, by Chantal Fernando, is a must-read story that will have every reader immediately needing more from this series and author.  This exhilarating and deeply-rooted story is one which contains a fast-paced and intoxicating storyline, with a different kind-of-plot, with so many questionable twists and turns that will, in turn, leave many heads joyously spinning as each moment is voraciously read, as the plot thickens, thereby leaving many in a constant state of reader-buzz.

Gah..what a story!  Fallen Princess quickly drew me in as this genre has a tight hold on me as one-of-the-best, therefore always drawing me in whenever a new story comes to fruition.  And, this one certainly did not disappoint.  As a new reader of this series and author, I was thoroughly entranced with the writing as it took me on quite an electrifying journey.  Having come into this story blindly, there was this insatiable need to play catch-up with all of the previous characters as many had made great cameos from not only this particular series but also from others as well.  And..I found out that I loved them all.  THIS is why I love MC stories, they’re just so amazingly addicting and always have me needing more from their world.  As each character played such a pivotal role in this particular story, it was easy to get attached to each of them immediately.  Readers of the Wind Dragons MC and the Cursed Ravens MC will certainly be in for a treat while reading Fallen Princess as it is a Second Generation Story containing all sorts of yummy MC goodness from both series.

I loved this story.  Its storyline contained such a welcomed and unknown depth and direction that had this reader consistently wondering about its overall juxtaposition.  The winding and absolutely thrilling plot had so much juice to it that I was consistently questioning my numerous theories as many of them changed just as soon as I thought I had it all figured out.  In addition, as this story has an over-abundance of characters, many of whom have such fulfilling roles, as a whole, they all contributed to the overall effectiveness of this excellent read.

Yes.  While my head did spin a bit and was in a constant state of warmed-goo, from not only the pivotal electrifying moments from the two main characters, and, I seriously need to read the previous stories from both series, there were a few questionable and confusing moments that left this reader…kind of on the fence about certain things.  As I did have hopes for actually further depth and development in these particular areas, and, due to a smattering of typos, this slight confusion, did have this reader considering its overall position within the story and for this have been determined to be practically irrelevant, to this amazing, mysterious, and, addicting story..I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend Fallen Princess by Chantal Fernando..:)

Hearts of Fire by Kay Doherty (Arc) Review!

Hearts of Fire (Chevalier, #1)Hearts of Fire by Kay Doherty

Heart of Fire (ARC) was graciously provided to me by IndiGo Marketing & Design for an honest review. I have voluntarily read this book and have provided my honest opinion.

                                                                         A Paranormal Favorite

An absolutely addicting, incredibly gripping, mysteriously intriguing, angst-filled, heart-warming of a read that is filled-to-the-gill with such beautifully mesmerizing and indescribable paranormal moments, had this reader voraciously reading while soaking in all of the reasons why I am consistently drawn to this genre as I was quickly hooked by such a story yet again.

WOW! I am pleasantly surprised at having just completed such a great new read that I had not even remotely had even predicted, and this new read has me anxious for more from this new series.

Hearts of Fire, by Kay Doherty, was like an amalgamation of so many wonderfully different tropes that I have always found myself gravitating towards, and this particular story was just like the icing on the cake as they individually kept flying by in rapid succession that enabled me to love this story immensely.  Readers who have loved stories from Jennifer Armentrout, Stephenie Meyer, and, Antonia Aquilante will be blown-away by this concoction of Paranormal greatness.  I read with an insatiable thirst as I made my way through this high-intensity Paranormal journey, which had this reader in a seemingly frenzied equaled state of eyes-glued-to-my-kindle kind-of-zone as well as a high-pitched gleeful-squealing-state that I never wanted to end.

I absolutely loooved Hearts of Fire for so many different reasons.  The developing storyline and plentiful plot, the thoroughly likable characters, the underlying indescribable mystery, and the absolute need for more from this series all collectively describes this fantastic read.

That all being said, however, as a added tidbit, sure, I could have used more depth and development, but, really, REALLY, it all morphed into was such a great story that this light need could be, for this reader, be brushed right under the rug due to the overall blindsided greatness of this story.  I without-a-doubt recommend Heart of Fire, by Kay Doherty and will definitely be returning to this series again real soon..:)

Make Him Howl by Zoe Ashwood; Release Blitz w/ Synopsis, Excerpt, Teaser, and, Purchase Links!

Title: Make Him Howl
Series: Shift Book #3
Author: Zoe Ashwood
Genre: Shapeshifter Romance
Release Date: April 4, 2019
Cover Design: Natasha Snow Designs

Funny how a wolf can survive after losing half his soul. Twice.

Gabriel is living in a nightmare. His sloppy mistake allowed rogue shifters to kidnap Parker, his best friend and partner. Unwilling to rest and plagued with memories of his twin brother who’d died in his arms, he pushes himself to the limits of endurance in his hunt to retrieve Parker.

Until the day she saves herself.

Parker thought that being secretly in love with her partner was the low point of her career. She was wrong. Forced to compete in shapeshifter cage fights, she commits an unspeakable act she can never undo. With her mind and body too bruised to resume her former job, she’s fighting to keep sane. Keeping away from overprotective Gabriel is even harder.

But their enemies are closing in, hurting shifters and humans alike. With so much to lose, their only solution will be to fight together, even if this brings up truths they’re not ready to face.
Chapter One
Gabriel
A cold January wind whipped a gust of snowflakes around the corner of the rusty barn. Gabriel gripped his gun tighter and jerked his chin at Lucas Thibault, the universal signal for ‘I’ve got you covered.’ The young soldier raised his weapon and stepped around the pile of corrugated iron, scanning the dark yard for potential Guard activity.
This was the fourth location they’d raided that week. Their fourth attempt to find Gabriel’s missing partner. Their fourth failure. Parker Bourne had been missing for two weeks, and Gabriel was starting to lose hope that they’d find her in one piece. Or that they’d find her at all.
The thought hollowed his insides, and he barely kept down the bile rising in his throat.
“Clear,” Lucas said under his breath, but Gabriel’s sensitive ears picked up the sound easily, even over the whistling wind.
They approached the door but didn’t enter, waiting for Kai’s signal. The general had two more teams doing a perimeter search, so not one Guard member would escape this raid. They needed all the information they could get. Letting someone go by mistake was not an option.
“Breach now.” Kai’s voice crackled through the ear pieces.
Gabriel winced at the sound but grabbed the edge of the old sliding doors and shoved them wide while Lucas burst into the barn, ready to put a tranquilizer dart into whomever was hiding inside.
The vast, disused barn was completely abandoned, but the smell of urine, blood, and shifter sweat had Gabriel gagging and breathing through his mouth.
“Holy shit.” Lucas kicked over a wooden crate to check that it was empty. “This place stinks.”
From the other side of the barn, Kai and Nik approached, the general and the former Guard lieutenant an incongruous pair. Their partnership just showed how much this hidden war was affecting everyone’s lives. Enemies became friends became enemies—they’d been betrayed by allies and learned to forgive their opponents.
Though right now, Gabriel wanted to shake Nik, press him for more information. Surely he had at least some idea where Reid Maxwell was taking his cage fighting ring?
“All clear.” Kai’s announcement was followed by a series of groans from the soldiers outside, then both team leaders dispatched sentries to form a perimeter.
Finally, the forensic unit was allowed inside, and with them, Claire Thibault, Nik’s mate and future Councilwoman. And Parker’s best friend. She’d insisted on coming along, hoping that they’d find Parker, or at least some clue of her, though they hadn’t had luck before.
Still, Gabriel had to admire her tenacity. In fact, everyone at SANA was working double time to find clues about Maxwell’s maneuvers. Were they also having trouble sleeping? Did they wake up from nightmares in which Parker was being dragged into Maxwell’s car, limp and unconscious?
No, that was likely only him. Because he’d caused Parker’s abduction and—
“Sir, you should come look at this.” A middle-aged woman, a polecat shifter by her scent, was kneeling in the dirt.
Gabriel was the first to arrive at her side. She was pointing at the ground, where a trap door was visible beneath a layer of dirty sawdust and sand.
“Weapons,” Kai barked, and their team all drew their guns, aiming them at the hatch.
“What do you think is in there?” Lucas murmured. The bear still hadn’t learned to keep his mouth shut in dangerous situations—a fact that bothered Gabriel more than he cared to admit. Parker had always known when silence was called for. As partners, they’d developed a sort of non-verbal language that served them perfectly in cases like this.
But now Kai had put Lucas as Gabriel’s temporary partner, and Gabriel refused to teach the youngster that same code. He wanted Parker back, not some rookie who insisted on bringing homemade snacks to a stakeout.
“It could be a tornado shelter,” offered Nik.
“Or the entrance to a secret prohibition vault,” Lucas countered.
Stifled groans from everyone followed his suggestion. Clearly, raiding three empty warehouses and a barn wasn’t sufficiently exciting for him.
“Enough.” Gabriel holstered his gun and crouched to grip the iron handle. He looked at the general. “Ready?”
They all trained their weapons, and Gabriel pulled.
And saw…a woman. She was lying in a small, coffin-like cubbyhole. She wasn’t moving. His heart stopped, then skittered madly; blonde hair covered her face, her thin shoulders dressed in a black blouse…
“Oh god, is she—” Claire’s voice from above him, strangled, almost a sob.
With a trembling hand, Gabriel brushed the hair from the woman’s face…and his heart sank. Not Parker. This wasn’t Parker. The woman’s cheek was warm under his touch, and when he slipped his fingertips to her throat, her pulse beat steadily.
“She’s just sedated,” he informed his colleagues.
“Get her out of there,” ordered Kai. “Get the medical team here, check her vitals.”
Gabriel looked up at his boss, surprised at the gruff tone of his voice.
“They had to have left just before we got here.” Nik was holding Claire and spoke over the top of her dark head. “For her to still be unconscious.”
“They knew we were coming.” Gabriel had come to the same conclusion. This space, remote and derelict but in Long Island, of all places, was too perfect to be abandoned for no reason. They should have at least found some supplies, maybe a lowly guard or two. Instead, Maxwell had left them with this parting gift.
“Who do you think she is?” Claire, clearly recovered from her shock, peered at the unknown woman being lifted onto a stretcher. “She smells like a shifter.”
“A jackal, I’d say,” replied Kai. “If she doesn’t wake up soon and identify herself, we’ll have to run her prints against the SANA database. In fact…” He motioned at a technician dusting a long old table for prints. “Run her prints anyway. She could be a Guard spy.”
“You think she let herself be tranquilized and stuffed into a box just so she could infiltrate SANA?” Claire’s eyes went wide at the thought.
“You would have done it, wouldn’t you?” Nik countered, but there was no rancor in his voice.
Instead, Gabriel had to look away at the man’s admiring gaze. These two were just perfect for each other.
“There’s something tucked into her back pocket, sir.” One of the medics pulled a small envelope from beneath the woman’s shirt and handed it to Kai.
“Gloves,” barked the general.
A panicked technician rushed over to get him a pair.
Kai slid his army knife under the flap and sliced the envelope open. Gabriel inched closer for a look, so he felt more than saw Kai flinch when he glimpsed the contents.
Gabriel moved without realizing it, snatching the Polaroid photograph from the general’s hands.
Parker was lying in a cage in her fox form, sleeping, her fur dirty and stuck in clumps. A small chunk of her left ear was missing, a folded newspaper propped up next to her.
The pain that punched through Gabriel’s gut was enough to make him drop the photo; he fumbled it, nearly crumpling it in his fist. That’s when he saw the back held a message.
Your friend for Nik. Leave a message at this number. A telephone number was scribbled underneath in blue ink.
Kai took the photo back and read the message aloud.
“Let’s do it,” Nik said, earning himself a punch from Claire. “What?” The former Guard lieutenant looked from Kai to Gabriel and then back at Claire. “You know it’s a good trade. I’d… I’d do anything to bring her back. I know how much she means to you.”
“Let’s do it,” Gabriel agreed.
If there was a way to rescue Parker, and Nik agreed…
“No!” Claire pushed Nik away and strode up to Gabriel.
She was almost a head shorter than him, and he had to remind himself to stand his ground when she yelled at him.
“Do you think that’s what Parker would want?” Claire asked. “To trade someone else for her? We’re not trading Nikolai, and you’re an ass to even suggest it, Gabriel West.”
Gabriel was about to point out that he wasn’t the one who’d come up with the idea, but Kai’s deep voice boomed over them all.
“SANA doesn’t negotiate with terrorists.”
They all turned to look at him.
“Your offer to sacrifice yourself is admirable, Gorski,” he continued. “But you know better than I that Reid Maxwell isn’t to be trusted. If we decided to trade you for Parker, chances are, you’d both end up dead. There’s no saying she’s still—”
“Don’t say it.” Gabriel didn’t recognize his voice. “Don’t you dare say she’s…” Dead. His mind supplied the word even though his lips couldn’t form it.
Claire tentatively touched his arm. “We’re not, Gabe. We’re just as worried about her as you are.”
You’re not. He wanted to shout at her, to push them all away. You can’t know what it’s like to lose your partner, to lose the one person who makes your days bearable.
They didn’t understand. Claire had found Nikolai, and Kai—Kai was some kind of robot who never seemed to need anyone. And Gabriel was stuck with young Lucas Thibault who talked too much, baked homemade bread, and refused to understand that eating smoked salmon in Gabriel’s car was strictly forbidden.
He laughed, a bitter, hollow sound—because the alternative was to cry. And he had no intention of breaking down right there. “What else are we going to do?” he asked. “We have no leads. No more thugs to shake down for information. We’ve exhausted every single scrap of data we got, and we’re still no closer to finding that motherfucker.”
When he got his hands on Reid Maxwell, he was going to rip off the bastard’s tail and shove it down his throat. Then set him on fire.
His body shivered, heralding his shift.
“Gabe, calm down.” Kai might have lowered his voice, but the words bore the unmistakable edge of command. “You know we’re doing everything we possibly can. And while we’re at it, please hand over that photo. Let my crew see if there’s a print on it—apart from yours, of course.”
The gentle rebuke brought him back from the brink of shifting. “Shit. Sorry.” He slipped the Polaroid into a clear baggie that a round-eyed technician held out to him. What was he thinking?
“We’ll try to arrange a meeting via that number,” Kai went on, “try to at least catch any messengers they send to the drop-off point. But I’m worried they might hurt Parker if they see we’re trying to double-cross them.”
“Don’t you think it would be better…”
Gabriel tuned out the chatter when others joined the discussion to determine the best next step. He turned to face the empty barn, sweeping his gaze across the churned-up, dirty floor. What had happened here? Had Parker fought in those cage fights? Was she hurt badly? Half her fucking ear was missing.
Another shiver wracked his body, and he knew he only had moments before the need to shift overwhelmed him. Stripping out of his combat gear, he piled his two guns on top. Then he whistled to get the others’ attention.
“Can someone make sure this gets back to HQ?”
Kai dipped his head ever so slightly, though his lips pressed together in disapproval. But it was Claire who said, “Are you crazy? It’ll take you hours to get home. And how will you get into the city?”
“Subway.” He forced a grin, though his cheek muscles hurt; he probably looked as if he was in pain.
The truth was that human brains glossed over the unexpected. If they saw a wolf trotting down First Avenue, they’d convince themselves it was a large stray dog. And even the city that never sleeps got quieter at four in the morning.
He turned his back on his colleagues, shoved his underwear down, and shifted mid-step. His more sensitive wolf’s nose twitched at the acrid scents hanging in the air, so he raced for the open back door, plunging into the darkness outside. A medic gave a startled gasp, but Gabriel paid her no mind.

All he knew was the frozen ground beneath his paws and the disappointment of having failed, yet again, to retrieve his partner. For a couple of hours at least, he would leave behind the worry and the powerless rage at the Guard and everything they stood for. He howled to the crescent moon, just visible through the thin winter clouds, and surged into the woods.
