Excerpt:

“I don’t think this is wise,” Tink said for what had to be the hundredth time since he realized I was getting ready for a night out. “Like I think this is very poorly thought-out, if you ask me, Lite Bright.”

“I didn’t ask you, Tink.”

My uninvited roommate of sorts hovered outside my bathroom. Tink wasn’t human, but right now, he looked like any normal twenty-something guy. Well, if normal, twenty-something guys had natural, shockingly white hair and were beautiful in a way that almost seemed fragile.

This was his full-grown Tink size, something I was still—even after all this time—getting used to. I was more accustomed to pint-sized Tink with the translucent wings. After all, he was a brownie.

After the attack that had taken my mother’s life and should’ve ended mine, he’d basically moved in with me. He’d been here for the last two years, something Ivy’s husband pretended to be grateful for, but in reality, I knew he secretly missed the dude.

“You should ask me,” he replied. When I glanced over at him, I got a little distracted by the dazzle…emanating from the sequin tank top he wore. It was so shimmery that I wondered if he was using some of his magic.

Tink may be a goofball, but he was also one of the most powerful creatures in our realm.

Thank God there was only one of him.

“I am a wealth of amazing advice,” he continued. Dixon, the cat he’d named after a Walking Dead character that Tink called “the hottest redneck eva” slinked around Tink’s ankles. The cat was all gray except for his tail, which looked like it had been dipped in white paint.

I snorted. “When have you ever given me good advice?”

“When I told you two weeks ago not to eat the whole carton of beignets because you’d get sick and you did,” he shot back.

I winced, picking up my mascara. I had gotten sick, but I deserved that carton of sugary, fried goodness. That day…

I didn’t want to think about that day.

“And what about when you ordered that supreme pizza and ate almost all of it?” he said. “I told you that it would probably make you feel bad later.”

Nose wrinkling, I tried to remember what night he was talking about. There were a lot of Friday nights—pizza night in my household—that I ate an entire pie and felt terrible afterward.

“Or how about that time I told you that the seared ahi tuna looked a little gray for my liking? But, oh no, Brighton knows better.” He reached down, scratching Dixon between the ears. “You ate it all, and then I spent the night cleaning up your puke.”

Ew.

Victor by Brenda Rothert (Arc) Review!

Victor (Chicago Blaze, #3)Victor by Brenda Rothert

Victor (Chicago Blaze, #3) (ARC) was graciously provided to me by Inkslinger PR for an honest review. I have voluntarily read this book and have provided my honest opinion.

“A Heart-Breaking, Gripping, and, Heart-Warming Read”

A sweet, heart-warming, squeal-worthy, yet absolutely gut-wrenching, addicting read has the emotions of this reader vying for attention as the after-affects of this new read vary between greatly stunned to a desperate needy state of warmed loving goo that teeter back and forth as a result of a recent read of a particular hockey team once again..

WHOOP!  WHOOP!  “He passes the puck to Anton..to Luca..and..what’s this??  What’s happening sports fans??  The lightening fast missile goes right back to Victor and he..he…SCORES!!!”  *fans cheer loudly*  This is what it feels like when I read a new story from one of my most favorite tropes..Hockey!  Pure excitement fueled by high-levels of adrenaline..YES!!  *fist pump*

For this, I may have screamed just a wee bit upon discovering the next release from the Chicago Blaze Series was due to come out because each of my reads from this series has been a great one..

Victor..oh sweetheart Victor..I have waited not-so-patiently, ever since the first book of the series, to read about this mysterious yet very intriguing character.  And, boy, it has not been easy to wait as there have been tiny snippets throughout the previous books as to the character’s great potentiality.  But..BUT…once his story presented itself, it’s overall storyline was so incredibly mind-blowing and beautiful and one of those that had me needing to squeeeze hug not only Victor but also sooo many other characters of this story.

Victor, by Brenda Rothert, was quite the read.  This friends-to-lovers story was such an endearingly heart-warming read that I actually didn’t mind it’s slow pace and slight steam.  But, one thing I can attest to are the shocking blast-in-the-face kind-of-moments that are typically rare for this reader and for this are generally avoided whenever possible.  This story has major triggers that were beyond shocking that blindsided this reader like a quickly moving intermittent and painful storm.  Moments filled with childhood abuse and illness, death, and, extortion were severely difficult to read.

I loved the overall theme of this story.  Victor, is a strong, gorgeous and mighty hockey player on the exterior.  But, on the interior, a deeply hidden tortured individual as he is a product of an indescribable childhood filled with pain, isolation, and abuse.  He is someone who, understandably, has spent his life looking for some sort of validation that he is actually worth more than what he had experienced.  In his quest for that security blanket kind of love, comfort, and success, he runs into Lindy.  As a walking encyclopedia of hockey knowledge, this hard-working, multi-talented, humble, kind concession stand worker, Lindy turns into this Florence Nightingale of warmed-comfort for Victor just at the right time, as the beginning of the end for him, in more ways than one, was quickly approaching.  As discussions at the rink turn into dinner and movies, as both seemingly different individuals begin to unearth actual similarities, quiet insecurities and hidden fears turn into a strengthening loving bond for them both..

Throughout this story, there were plentiful cameos from characters from previous books, and, it was no surprise how much I continue to squishy-love the main and secondary characters from this series.  They are all wonderfully realistic and unique that it is super easy to quickly become addicted to their lives as well.

Therefore, like a frigid blast to the face during a blizzard, as I read through this story, full of so many sub-plots, some that were massive and heart-breakingly brutal, it was difficult for this reader to completely understand the purpose of some of them and their connection to the main plot as that which was indicated was slight and limited.  With a need for more depth and development to some of the sub-plots as well as the actual main plot, a true connection between the main characters as well as an overall storyline connection would be more clear.  It is also in this reader’s opinion that to have the actual moments described in detail rather than glanced over would be beneficial for that overall well-rounded connection between the characters and the actual storyline as well.

Despite the shocked confusion of this storyline, in the end, it was truly an intrinsically beautiful, gripping, and, heart-warming story.  There were so many uplifting and encouraging security-blanket type-of-support, that these loving times had me gushing all over my kindle.  I adore the main characters from this series and am glad to have read more of their hockey world..:)

*star rating: 4.30 ‘I really liked it” stars*

About INTERFERENCE

BRAYDEN

I’m a goddamn prodigy. It’s true. Ask anyone.
I threw my first curveball the day I was born.

The whole damn town is waiting on me.
To live up to my father’s famous name. To reach for the stars.

All I want to reach for is her.

But Ashley is the sweet addiction I can’t afford. She’s my best friend’s sister. Hell, she’s practically my little sister. For years, I’ve protected her from guys that want one thing. What happens now that I’ve turned into one of them? Who’s gonna shield her from the way I was made, from my little white lies and from what I’m about to become?

My game plan sounds simple: Pitch my way into the Major League draft and stay out of Ashley Foster’s pants. That first part may be statistically difficult.

The second feels damn near impossible.

ASHLEY

From the moment we met, I knew he was trouble.
The kind my mother sent me to find.
The type that ruins you for any other brand.

When we were young kids, Didn’t know what to call the frogs and butterflies that danced in my belly whenever Brayden came near. Now I know they have a name.

Those three little words that could heal or destroy him.

Before Brayden, my life was normal. And then it wasn’t. It couldn’t be. Ever again.
How was I to know that stealing his seat would change all our lives?

Anger and forgiveness share two halves of the same coin.
Our story might make you choose sides.

Excerpt:

“What’s going on with you, Brayden?” The venom in my tone peeled slowly away. “Why were you sitting in your car in a public parking lot, getting wasted all by yourself?”

He stepped closer to me, backing me up against my door. He smelled like a dark combination of aftershave and booze. He reached a hand up and traced the outside of my cheek with his fingertips, startling me.

He’d touched me a thousand times over the years, but this felt . . . different. His rough skin kept glancing across the softness of mine, branding nerve endings that left my suit of imaginary armor slipped slightly askew. My brain stuttered right past angry, unsure of what emotion to grab hold of next.

“Shoe’s on the other foot now, isn’t it?” The animosity laced between his words didn’t match his gentle touch. His fingers danced against the sensitive spot just below my ear. “You’re usually the one reminding me. I’m not your brother.”

I nodded timidly in response. The thing with his finger had disconnected the hardwire between my brain and mouth. I licked my lips. He pressed down harshly on the side of my neck, forcing my eyes to question his. A look of pain washed over his face. His shoulders rose and fell, weighted down by whatever trouble he’d placed there.

He swallowed hard. “I didn’t want him to kiss you.”

“What?” My shock forced my voice to rise above a whisper. He was staring at my lips now in a way that made me feel flush all over. “Why?”

“I don’t know.”

The pad of his thumb slid over to brush across my bottom lip.

Back. Forth. Back again.

“Thinking about him touching you was eating me alive all night. I couldn’t let him kiss you.”

He didn’t let me process his words. Without warning, he replaced the pressure of his thumb with his lips. He pressed them against mine in a firm kiss that ended too fast. It felt so intense Joey’s rules never came to mind.

“Brayden?” His name came out as a plea of confusion. I needed to speak it out loud to ensure I was really awake. I bit down on my top lip, scraping it across the ridge of my bottom teeth.

He groaned deep in his chest. “I can’t . . . I need to . . .” He didn’t finish the thought.

He took another step forward and smashed his lips back down on mine. I wasn’t even sure it could be called a kiss as much as a total possession of my mouth. His lips fit perfectly. They sandwiched between my own, completing a puzzle that had always longed for its missing piece.

He didn’t play by any of Joey’s rules. He kept his mouth pressed to me while pulling and tugging my bottom lip between both of his. His hands tangled through my hair, holding me in place. He tipped my head back more, giving himself better access.

As his mouth kept moving, so did his body. He shifted forward and pulled me toward him at the same time. My chest molded against his. I moaned into his mouth and tugged the hair at the back of his neck.

He answered by sucking harder against my bottom lip as his hands slid down and palmed both sides of my ass. His lips dragged over to the corner of my mouth as he started murmuring strings of craziness I couldn’t totally understand.

“I knew it . . . God, so sweet.” His hands squeezed me harder as his tongue traced across the very top of my lip.

My breath came out in short little pants. I pulled harder on the back of his neck until he pressed his mouth back fully onto mine.

Rule Six lay in tatters at my feet.

I didn’t want him to stop. Didn’t give a shit about pressure or angles. I just wanted everything. Every single thing he could give me.

Puffy hearts and unicorns.

The whole damn rainbow.

The warm morning breeze carried the
smell of sea salt, exotic spices, and the promise of a distant sandstorm.
Stephan breathed deeply, closing his
eyes against the gentle currents, and leaned on the windowsill, offering his
face up to the sun. It was not yet noon, but the heat was already building up.
Soon the busy streets of the port city of Varta would empty, the denizens
taking a brief respite during the midday hours to hide in the relative cool of
their homes, away from the glare of the ruthless sun. At dusk, all activity
would renew with rekindled vigor as the streets around the harbor filled with
the cries of peddlers hawking their wares, the music of wandering performers,
and the general hubbub of a large city going about its business. But for now,
Stephan simply enjoyed the bright sunshine, which had been so rare in his
native Seveihar, before he’d be forced to retreat to the shade of his rooms.
No, their rooms. He’d been living with
Warren, his former footman and current lover, for the past six months, sharing
the two cozy rooms in one of the quieter districts of Varta. The modest
appointments were a far cry from the richness of his father’s royal palace in
Sever, but luxury was low on Stephan’s priority list. These short months were
the happiest he’d been in his entire life. Granted, at twenty years old, he was
still at the beginning of his journey, but with his father gone and the rest of
the family actively persecuting him, he’d had his fair share of misery.
Stephan sighed and closed the wooden
shutters. Even so, the room was still softly illuminated, filled with
translucent, soporific light. The hem of his white silk robe trailed after him
as he made his way to the large writing desk, cluttered with sheaves of paper
and different-colored inkwells. Warren, being the son of a merchant, was the
one with the experience and a practical grasp for business, and he had been the
one to suggest they invest the money left from selling Stephan’s extensive
collection of jewelry in local commerce. For centuries, Varta, the second
largest city of Segor, had been a crucial junction for the passage of goods
between the deep south and the northern countries and provinces—including
Seveihar and rival Esnia. With trade burgeoning in recent years, investing in
independent shipping ventures seemed like a sound plan, although they were only
now beginning to see any returns. None of it was enough to make a fortune, but
for now, at least, they were able to live comfortably.
Stephan settled in a chair and pulled
out a stack of letters he wanted to sift through one more time. While Warren
was responsible for the finances, Stephan handled the records and
correspondence. As a member of the royal family, he was well-versed in several
languages, including Segati—a dialect spoken in Segor and along the long
stretch of the southern coast. But reading and writing with a teacher weren’t
the same as practicing the language among native speakers, and Stephan wanted
to brush up on his communication skills as much as possible to be able to
navigate the often-equivocal patterns of business negotiations with Segorian
merchants and ship owners.
He was writing down some notes on a
piece of paper when the door opened, and Warren stepped in, letting out a long-suffering
sigh as he closed the door and took off his sweat-soaked scarf.
Stephan smiled as he rose to meet him.
He threw his arms around Warren, planting a quick kiss on his lips. Warren’s
skin, flushed and hot, still carried traces of salt and fish smell.
“I missed you,” Stephan said playfully.
Warren grinned in response, taking
Stephan’s hand and kissing his fingers. “I’ve only been gone a few hours. And I
still stink from the docks.”
“I don’t mind.” Stephan nodded at the
leather-bound ledger sticking out of Warren’s coat pocket. “Any news?”
“The ship should arrive any day now.
With the price of silk going up, we should make a nice profit off this
consignment.”
“You might be the one to blame for the
increase in prices,” Stephan teased. “You didn’t have to buy me quite so many
dresses.”
“Of course I did. They make you happy.
And I love seeing you in them.”
Warren let go of Stephan and threw the
ledger on the desk. He was still smiling, but Stephan could sense tension in
the rigid set of his shoulders and the way his smile quickly turned from
genuine to strained.
“What’s wrong?” Stephan asked. “Are you
worried about the ship being delayed?”
Warren shook his head and sat on the
long bench beside a low dining table. He picked an orange from a fruit bowl and
began peeling it.
“I’ve heard some bad news from
Seveihar,” he said, avoiding meeting Stephan’s eyes.
Stephan sat back at the desk, tucking
his long hair behind his ear in a nervous gesture. He knew he wasn’t going to
like it.
“The war has started, hasn’t it?” he
asked quietly.
Warren nodded. “Rumors spread fast in
this city. It seems the first thing your brother did after ascending to the
throne was declare war on Esnia.”
Stephan swore softly. His older brother,
Robert, had been warmongering to garner political support, but until now,
Stephan had clung to the naïve hope he wouldn’t go as far as actually starting
a full-blown territorial war with their neighbor. Or at least that his advisers
would stop him from making such a foolish move, if he wasn’t prudent enough to
restrain himself. Even after fleeing his homeland and abandoning his title,
Stephan couldn’t help but feel somehow responsible for the wellbeing of its
people. Waging a war when most of them were already struggling with the
increase in waterway taxes his uncle Rowan had decreed last fall would only add
insult to injury.
“That wasn’t what got me worried,
though. There’s more.” Warren dropped the peelings on the table and frowned at
the naked fruit, as if surprised it turned out to be an orange after all.
“There’s talk about Seveiharians in Varta. Apparently, an envoy arrived at the
Governor’s palace two days ago. They were trying to keep it secret, but again,
Varta is anything but surreptitious.”
Stephan shrugged. “So? They must be here
to amend trade agreements. War changes demand, and the usual shipping routes
would need to be altered if the Zenna River proves too dangerous now for
regular transport.”
“No doubt.” Warren handed him a few
orange slices, and Stephan popped them in his mouth. He flicked his tongue
across his lips to lick away the juice, noting the way Warren’s gaze took on a
familiar intensity as he followed the tiny movement.
Warren’s unmistakable interest sent a
jolt of heat down his belly, triggering his own arousal. He licked his lips
again, this time in an involuntary response to the thought of what he and
Warren could be doing to while away the sultry midday hours. But apparently
Warren wasn’t done yet.

Chapter One
As it always did, the Wheel of the Year continued to turn.

Midsummer turned to Midfall.

Midfall to Midwinter.

Midwinter to Midspring.

The seasons changed. The years changed. But life in the Fairy Court remained the same.

And this left Titania dissatisfied.

“It is time for a change,” she announced one evening over dinner. Oberon had known something was wrong the moment she dismissed the waiting staff. It had been over three hundred years since they had eaten alone, and even that was because Titania had wanted to discuss the idea of adopting another Changeling. Not that the idea had gone anywhere, of course. Oberon had learned his lesson about taking human children long before that, and he had not been keen to repeat the experiment. It was natural, then, that he held his breath when Titania spoke, and he waited for whatever she was about to decide. “We have become stale.”

Oberon found it impossible to disagree. Being married for a millennium was certainly an accomplishment by anyone’s count—especially when fairy marriages were annulled and then voluntarily renewed on an annual basis. But one thousand years of an arranged marriage was going above and beyond in his royal duties, of this, he was sure.

“What do you propose?” he asked, not entirely sure he wanted an answer. A separation from Titania might allow them both to pursue other interests, but there was no denying that a split in the Royal Court could rip the whole of his already unstable kingdom in half.

“A separation.”

He nodded. He’d known where this was going, and he couldn’t say he was particularly unhappy about it. But he had questions.

“Why now? We’ve been living this same way these last three hundred years. Why propose this now?”

“It is the best possible time. The kingdom is at risk of civil war…”

“…Which is exactly why we should be united.”

“Or is it why this is the ideal time for a split? We would not want to needlessly disrupt harmony in the kingdom. Ergo, if we split while there are already fractures…”

“…we guarantee a split in the kingdom.”

“We hurry along a split we already know is coming.”

Oberon closed his eyes and shook his head. Titania had always been ruthlessly logical. It was one of the reasons his father had chosen her as a perfect mate, and—more importantly—a future queen.

“But…”

“I have met someone else.”

Well, that was the clincher, wasn’t it?

“I have fallen in love.”

“Love?” Oberon frowned at his queen, unsure of exactly what he was hearing. “What of love? We are a king and a queen. Love need play no part in anything.”

“Oberon, even the mortals have abandoned that way of thinking now. It is time for us to catch up.”

Oberon grunted. It pained him to hear Titania speak of love. She’d not as much as breathed the word in five hundred years, not since his trick to cause her to fall for the human Bottom.

“This love. It is not the human, is it?” he asked. “The actor.” His voice dripped with venom as he spoke, though he himself wasn’t sure if he was jealous that she had fallen with such ease or angry that his own magic had been the cause.

“Oberon, humans lead short lives. Bottom died many, many years ago.”

“Then who?”

This time, it was Titania’s turn to shake her head, causing blossoms of pink and orange to fall from her hair and hit the ground.

“Not important,” she said. She stood and pushed her chair back under the oak table, before walking delicately over and taking her husband’s left hand. “I release you.” She smiled. She turned a hand over and undid the leather strap that was tied at his palm. “I release you.” She unwound the leather from his hand, uncrossing the straps that worked up his forearm. “I release you.” She pulled the leather from his bicep, taut with the tension and stress running through his body. She leaned over and kissed his forehead. “Good luck to you, Oberon.”

He stood at the window of his tower, having vanished the glass to get a better look at what was going on. He watched as Titania loaded her trunks onto the glass chariot. He watched as a male fairy, face obscured by some of Titania’s trickery to stop him from being identified, helped to pile the heavier pieces of furniture. He watched as the two of them climbed into the chariot, and as the dragonflies took flight, pulling it into the woods and out of sight.

He thought he should shout. He thought he should swear. He thought he should cry. But he found himself empty. For a thousand years, he had known he could be temperamental or selfish or immature and Titania would always be by his side. Because she had had to. They had vows. But she had met someone better than him, and she was gone.

“I don’t know what to do.”

Ultimately, he chose to do what many do when they find themselves bereft, and he began to prepare himself for bed. He removed his emerald-green robes and ran a damp washcloth across his torso. His muscles contracted at the cold, tightening and becoming more defined than they usually were when hidden beneath his loose robes. Usually, he enjoyed the feeling of his tightening body, but even that was little comfort in the light of being left alone. He unwrapped the leather strap that ran across his waist—a symbol of his perpetual commitment to his kingdom—and draped it across the wooden dressing table. He dipped the washcloth in the water again before removing his loincloth and washing the rest of his body. It was only right to be clean before entering the kingdom of the DreamWeaver, and he was not about to abandon formality and politesse just because he would be alone in his bed tonight. Naked, but dry after patting the water away with a towel, he knelt by his bed.

“I give thanks to the earth, which bore me and gave me life. I give thanks to the great unknown, who guides me and shapes my fate. I give thanks to my ancestors, from whom I descend and for whom I live a life which is not mine, but which belongs to my subjects. These are my thanks.”

He stood and climbed into bed, pulling his mouse pelt blankets over him, and curled up into a ball. Scrunching his eyes together, he willed himself to sleep. It didn’t come easily, as visions of Titania and her paramour danced through his head, but eventually he found himself drifting off.

Lach has spent the last few thousand years counting only on himself. What he needed, he took. What he wanted, he won with charm. All except a god he turned his back on an age ago, when he had a different name and didn’t know what he was giving up.

Thanatos, god of merciful death, is one of the gentlest gods in the pantheon—easing the transition between life and death for billions of mortals. But he has faced eternity alone. After breaking his heart on the sharp words of a fisherman’s son, he hasn’t been able to connect with anyone.

Now, Lach is crashing back into Thanatos’s life, dragging him into an adventure that could save the world . . . or kill them both.

PATRON OF MERCY IS THE THIRD BOOK IN A SERIES, BUT CAN BE READ AS A STAND ALONE NOVEL.

Sam Burns wrote her first fantasy epic with her best friend when she was ten. Like almost any epic fiction written by a ten year old, it was awful. She likes to think she’s improved since then, if only because she has better handwriting now.
If she’s not writing, she’s almost certainly either reading or lost down a Wikipedia rabbit hole while pretending to research for a novel.

W.M. Fawkes is an author of LGBTQ+ urban fantasy and paranormal romance. With coauthor Sam Burns, she writes feisty Greek gods, men, and monsters in the Lords of the Underworld series. She lives with her partner in a house owned by three halloween-hued felines that dabble regularly in shadow walking.

Review:

My BlueMy Blue by Emery Jacobs

My Blue by Emery Jacobs (ARC) was graciously provided to me by Buoni Amici Press for an honest review. I have voluntarily read this book and have provided my honest opinion.

                             “An Emotionally-Powerful Read”

An exquisitely beautiful and tragic story about a young immensely tangible forever kind-of-love, filled with loss and desolation, dedication and sacrifice, and, absolute whole-hearted devotion..

Wow..a powerhouse of a story that utterly blew-me-away with its heart-warming, indescribably heart-shattering, profoundly gripping, and mysteriously intense moments has just landed on my list of Best Reads for 2019.

I am thoroughly and completely frazzled at the magnitude of my most recent read of an upcoming story that will undoubtedly have many readers at different levels of stunned amazement as a result of this tremendously deep, mysterious, heart-breaking, and, ultimately heart-warming story.

My Blue, by Emery Jacobs is such a great story with an amazing storyline with a no-holds-barred kind of riveting plot, with main and secondary characters who are so easy to love and also so easy to develop that actual need to gently throttle.  Its pace and fluidity contained words with such humanistic qualities that in turn languidly wrapped themselves around me as I read through this stunning story with its immense storyline, unforgettable characters and vigorous plot.

Even though this story was such a great read, it also contained moments that, in this reader’s opinion, needed more depth and development as they appeared to be either glanced over with seemingly uneventful or lightly touched upon solutions, and for this, with the existence of a few typos, has this reader hoping for more.  Despite this hopeful need, this story still remains a good one that is without-a-doubt a highly-recommended read as I really liked it..:)
