I See The Light by Arden O’Keefe

I-See-The-Light

Elves After Dark, Book 5

Heath had always been a misfit – a weirdo who went all over town in a tank top and shorts even on a coldest day; who claimed his dog could talk to him; who saw this blinding light every Christmas Eve coming from the woods behind his house that no one else saw.

Even his mother made all sorts of excuses to stay far away from him. If it had not been for his grandma – who did love him despite all his oddness, he would never have had anyone to call his own.

The night before Christmas, with the silliest plan in mind and his coward dog tagging along, he sets out to find the true source of the mysterious light he sees from his window. When he finds the cheerful bunch of elves gathered around the magical bonfire celebrating like kids high on sugar, Heath could not be more excited. Then, finding out that he is half elf and half human gives a meaning to his life; finally understanding the reason behind his weirdness.

Buddying up with a cute elf named Shea for the night to see what it means to possess the magic of an elf, Heath goes on a journey to spread the gift of happiness amongst those who have been good this year. But when the night comes to an end, he is asked to make a decision.

Whether to embrace the magic of an elf within him completely or become a plain, old human and go back to living an ordinary life; back in the world where he was never accepted and to the universe which didn’t have Shea in it…

Excerpt:

When Chrissy came back down, lugging a large suitcase behind her, she didn’t even spare a glance at her mother, brushing past May and out of the house. Her mother quickly went to the porch and watched as Chrissy threw the suitcase in the backseat of her old Chevy and drove off without saying another word—even to her son. May had a feeling it was likely the last she’d ever see of her daughter, and yet, she didn’t try to stop her. There was no point. It was time for all of them to move on. However, as May thought about raising a five-year-old by herself, she was overcome with emotion as she sat on the front step. Her tired eyes welled quickly as her head filled with new worries. She knew she was in for a difficult road, but several questions still haunted her about the boy—how could she keep him safe from those who wanted to do him harm, because he was so unique? That was her primary concern. When a small hand touched her shoulder, May quickly wiped away her tears and turned to the sweet boy who sat down beside her. She picked him up with some difficulty and sat him on her lap, his big brown eyes reminding her of Chrissy. A lump formed in her throat, but May refused to let out the sob that wanted to make itself known. “Hi sweetie. I thought I put you to bed.” The little boy rested his head on her shoulder and said, “I couldn’t sleep.” “You couldn’t sleep, because Gramma didn’t tell you a bedtime story tonight, right?” May asked in a voice just above a whisper, to which he simply bobbed his head. “Come on. Let’s go inside, and I’ll tell you whichever story you want to hear tonight, okay?” “Where did Mommy go, Gramma?” the small boy asked timidly. May wasn’t sure what to say. How was a five-year-old child going to process the concept of abandonment? It was a fact, indeed, that her daughter had abandoned her only grandson. “Your mommy—she went on a road trip to the North Pole. She had to go tell Santa what a good little boy you’ve been and that she wanted the best-est presents sent for you this year.” “But… but, tomorrow is Christmas,” the boy responded, raising his head to look at May. “Will she be back tomorrow?” May smiled down at him, her sad expression had to hide. “I don’t know, sweetie. I’m not sure.” However hard she tried, May couldn’t stop the tears from escaping her eyes “She… she isn’t coming back, is she, Gramma?” “Sweetie…” That was all she could manage to say between her tears. Looking into his innocent, questioning eyes, May just couldn’t lie to him. The boy sat up a bit before offering his defense. “I went into the woods, because I wanted to find that light, Gramma. Mommy said I was lying, because she couldn’t see the light, but I saw the light. You said you saw it too. How come Mommy couldn’t?” May sniffed before wiping her tears with her free hand. “Yes, yes, honey. I can see it. It shined so brightly last night.” The little boy gave her a look of disbelief. “It’s… I see it now, too. See there?” He pointed toward the woods to the left of the house. May looked in that direction and offered a smile. “Oh yes, it’s so beautiful, isn’t it, honey?” When she didn’t get a response, she turned to look at him again and asked, “What’s wrong?” “You don’t see it, do you, Gramma. The light is on the other side of the woods. You didn’t say the truth, and you said God punishes people who lie. Will God punish you?” May pulled him closer and hugged him tightly. “I’m so sorry, honey. I didn’t mean to lie,” she responded, cradling him for a while in her arms. “I’m crazy, like Mommy says.” “No! No, you’re not, honey. Look at me… you are not crazy. Your mommy was wrong to say that. I know we can’t see the light you see, but I believe in you. I believe it when you say you see the light. It’s God’s way of telling us that you’re special. It must be God’s purpose to show that light to you.” The boy furrowed his brows. “Then… Then, why didn’t God take me to it? I went to find it, Gramma, but I got lost. The light kept running away from me.” May looked into the woods in the direction the boy had pointed, carefully choosing her words before she answered with a smile, “Maybe it’s just not the right time for you to find it. Maybe you’re meant to find it when you’re older? I guess you’ll have to wait.”

A Good Bad Idea Story, Book 5

Elias Forthwright

Can a chance meeting lead to true love? I sure hope so, because I’m falling hard and fast for North. I’m normally too shy to be attracted to a playful flirt like him, but he’s full of surprises that bring out the best in me. Even though we’re nothing alike, he’s everything I never knew I needed.

Maybe it’s silly to feel like the cosmic universe conspired to bring us together, but North makes me want to believe in the impossible. After all, it would be stupid to run away from love when all signs point to him being the one, right?

North Easton

To say I’ve lived a strange life is a massive understatement. I’m used to weird things being the norm, but even I never expected to fall in love with a sweetheart the first time I meet him. Elias makes me feel all warm and gooey inside like a hot brownie. If I get lucky, maybe he’ll want a bite. And if I’m really lucky, he’ll want to come back for seconds, thirds, fourths, and forever.

I know we just met, but is it too soon to plan for a lifetime of canoodling with Elias? Shockingly, I don’t mean that as a euphemism for once.

Love Directions is the fifth book in the Good Bad Idea series. This novel features a shy/flirt, instalove, opposites attract romance. Full of cute sweetness and sexy fun, every story ends with a satisfying HEA and no cliffhangers. Each book can be read as a standalone or as part of the series in order.

Excerpt:

North shook my hand as he introduced himself, sending currents zinging through me as we touched. “I’m North Easton. Nice to meet you, Elias.”
That was quite an interesting name. “North Easton?”
“Yeah, and my twin is West Easton. There isn’t a joke about that we haven’t heard.” He grinned, even though he was probably sick of everyone having the same response. “If you think that’s bad, my mom has a cat called Woof. My theory is she’s overcompensating for being named Linda.”
He said it with a straight face, but I couldn’t believe him. “You’re joking, right?”
“I wish I was. When she was a kid, she had a Chihuahua named Meow.”
It was so absurd I had to laugh. “Now you’re just messing with me.”
North pulled out his phone and opened his group text with his mother and sister. He scrolled up a bit to a picture of a very regal-looking gray Siamese cat wearing a gold crown and white fur-lined purple velvet cloak. The texts under it made me snicker.

Mom: King Woof requests your presence at dinner.

West: Kings don’t make requests; they command.

Mom: Fine, he commands you to stop being a smart-ass.

North: Good luck with that. Does Lord Woofie have a specific time in mind?

The conversation was so delightfully weird. “I bet her next cat’s name is Mouse.”
“You’re probably right. That’s absolutely her sense of humor.”
I raised my drink in a toast. “Congratulations, you’re officially the most interesting person I know now.”
“I’m honored.” He clinked his glass against mine. “So, what’s this I hear about me being your stranger?”
As he drank his cocktail while watching me, I found myself tongue-tied. Thankfully, Red answered for me. “His horoscope said he would meet a stranger that would change his life today. It also suggested that he should be open to the possibility of love, hint hint. Mine said I should play Cupid, so this seems like the perfect trifecta to make magic happen.”
It was embarrassing having my horoscope habit being revealed. I hurried to justify my interest. “Horoscopes were my mom’s thing.”
North studied me, his gaze piercing through me as if he could see all my secrets somehow. I felt exposed but remained silent as I waited for him to respond. He took another sip before he shocked me. “You must be a Virgo.”
I blinked at him in disbelief. “How could you tell?”
His cryptic smile did funny things to my heart. “I’m magic.”
“If you’re so magical, what am I?” Red challenged.
“Oh, you’re definitely a Taurus. There’s no question about that.”
His accuracy was uncanny, further intriguing me. “Why do you know that?”
“I told you: I’m magic.” He stated it with so much confidence, I almost believed him. Who was this guy?

A twenty-year-old like me doesn’t stand a chance with an older playboy like Rune. Yet despite being total opposites, I’m lucky enough to call him my friend. The only relationships I used to be interested in were meaningless hookups with no strings attached. But Callum’s kindness touched a part of my heart I didn’t know existed, changing me forever. Ohhhh, it’s because our arrangement makes me fall in love with him for real. Oops?

I’ve ignored my feelings for Xander so many years that I’m convinced I only love him as a friend. It’s totally a coincidence that thinking of him with his awful ex-boyfriend makes me burn with raging hellfire, right? Series: Standalone
Genre:
Gay Romance
Tropes:

Synopsis:

It wasn’t like he’d never done this before…

Nicky Fender retired from sex work two years ago and never looked back. Then an offer he can’t refuse comes his way, and he agrees to one last exclusive arrangement. Good money and an apartment in Manhattan? He’d be a fool to turn that down.

The deal is dusk till dawn for two months. But once he meets Gideon—an older, quirky, autistic, filthy, uncertain businessman who wants to explore his sexuality—Nicky wishes sunrise would never come.

Excerpt:

Nicky Fender

“Let me get this straight,” I said, scanning the document. “The wife is the client? I mean, she’s the one setting her husband up with a male escort?”

“Correct.” Tina sat back as our server approached with dinner. “Well, her fiancé.”

I hummed and kept my mouth shut until we were alone again. Fuck, the pizza looked good. Of course, meeting with Tina meant it had to be some fancy pizza. She wouldn’t be caught dead with a regular slice. She wouldn’t be caught dead in Brooklyn either, which was why I’d met up with her in Manhattan at some swanky Italian place. But hey, she was buying.

“I’m waiting for the reason for why I’d agree,” I admitted bluntly. I hadn’t whored out my sweet ass in two years, and I was doing much better now. I worked three jobs for very little pay, I lived with my big brother, and I had practically no time for any hobbies. What’s not to love?

I’d thought about going back to Tina for some time, but whenever I considered it, there was this rock in the pit of my stomach that no amount of money could crush.

“I wanted you to see the requirements first,” she replied.

Well, there were a lot of them. I hadn’t gone through the entire list yet. After placing the document next to my plate, I cut into my fancy pizza and continued reading the list. There was plenty on hygiene, but nothing that went beyond what I was used to. I was to be blindfolded the whole time? All right… I’d never see the client’s face—or the client’s fiancé—which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“I get the impression from the client that the man wants to explore something before he agrees to marry her,” Tina revealed. I’d heard of weirder dynamics. “She hinted that it would be a one-time arrangement, and she placed emphasis on following instructions that seem to cover every inch of your body.”

Lovely.

“That’s a lot of exploring,” I pointed out. “He wants to meet with me four nights a week for two months.”

Tina lifted a shoulder in a slight shrug and sipped her wine.

More specifically, I had to be available for him between the hours of ten PM and six AM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

I scratched my ear.

The pay better be out of this world, ’cause I would have to quit at both Applebee’s and Starbucks. Not that I’d mourn those shifts, but I’d been at Applebee’s long enough to possibly make assistant manager when the current one quit next month. She was having a baby and moving to Jersey.

I stuck a piece of pizza into my mouth and eyed the requirements for safety, at which I almost choked on a pepperoni slice.

“How loaded is this couple?” I asked through a cough. The man demanded exclusivity, meaning I wasn’t allowed to be sexually active with anyone else for the duration of our arrangement. And that cost a fucking mint.

“Read on…” Tina smirked wryly.

I furrowed my brow—then spotted one of my few hard limits. I shook my head and wiped my mouth with the napkin. “No fucking way. Tina, you—no. Fuck this.”

I didn’t mess around without protection. Not a chance in hell.

“This is why I asked you, Nicky,” she told me patiently. “Considering your stance on protection and your sad little Facebook statuses on how single you are—” she ignored my glare “—not to mention that you’re not the type of guy who walks around with a string of hookups, I can count on you passing a screening with flying colors and taking on someone who wants exclusivity. You’re my only candidate.”

“Candidate to say no,” I retorted.

Tina adopted a smug expression and reached down to dig something out of her purse. “There’s a reason I wanted to save the perks for last,” she said. “Okay, so you know the requirements. An exclusive arrangement for both parties—during which you’re sexually active only with each other—four nights a week for two months. You won’t see him. He won’t violate your limits—”

“Going unprotected is a limit, Tina,” I grated. Fuck, I was getting pissed. Part of me had carried foolish hope that this would be such a golden case that I’d jump on the opportunity and earn some good dough before the rock in my stomach returned.

“And when you’re an escort dealing with multiple clients a week, nothing else would make sense,” she answered, extending another document to me. “I wouldn’t even try to approach my other sex workers with this, Nicky. You’re the exception only because you quit the field.”

“Hmpf.” I cast a disgruntled look her way before I lowered my gaze to the piece of paper.

Ahem.

Holy fuck.

Three grand a week—minus Tina’s finder’s fee of ten percent—plus living arrangements. There would be a studio apartment in my name, so to speak, rent and utilities paid for by the client. Corner of West 39th and Ninth Avenue—not a shabby address at all. One of my best friends lived in the Garment District. Adjacent to Hell’s Kitchen where another friend lived.

A Manhattan address and $3,000 a week for two months.

A guy could do worse.

I shifted in my seat and cleared my throat. “Is there, uh, any way to ensure safety by making sure the guy gets tested too?”

“Of course, Nicky.” The compassion in Tina’s crystal-blue eyes reminded me of the fact that she ran an ethical business based on choice and vetting. She didn’t headhunt sex workers; they had to come to her, and they—we—had to go through a selection process before she could, in good conscience, give us work.

Today, I was an exception for her, and my answer would be an exception too.

’Cause it looked like I was moving to Manhattan.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Love, Compromise, and the Expanding Box”

The colored juxtaposition of two individuals, one musically talented young man, who wears his heart on his sleeve, and the other a mysterious businessman with specific needs and an even stronger need for structure, space, and, his own form of needed peace.  Collectively, both individuals have equaled wants and desires, regardless of any preconceived mold, being partially lead by gripping, emotional and incredibly realistic challenges.  The smashing of any and all molds is a gloriously beautiful thing.  It was stunning.  It was heartbreaking.  It was realistic.  It was indescribable.  Beautiful discoveries, brightened understandings, and needy, strengthening, all-encompassing selfless moments took my breath away with my most recent read.

We Have Till Dawn, by Cara Dee, was unlike anything I have read.  Quite possibly ever.  I laughed, I cried, I was completely enamored with Nicky and Gideon.  I was completely addicted to the smooth yet unique style-of-writing; all interspersed with perfectly placed colloquial regional mannerisms.  I read until I began to actually absorb the words and only when they began to blend together from reading so long, did I call it a night.  It was an absolutely amazing read.

Having already read Public Display of Everything, and loved it, I knew this new read was going to be quite the treat.  And, boy, was it so much more than that. The purpose of practically everything within the story..was staggering.  It was intrinsically an, omg, these words are..omg..let me re-read this over and over again, kind-of-read.  It really didn’t make any difference that most of the sex was off page, except for THE ONE that made up for it all in the end.  The just-enough-kind-of-development for the secondary characters was fabulous, just enough for a majority of them to draw me in with their dialogue and developing stories.

That all being said, regardless of the ending being a wee bit rushed, and a need for more development to the school and music inclusion, as I felt I came in mid development, this was a brilliant story.  Gah, my sweetheart Gideon, I adore you and need to delicately squeeze hug you as your entire being is inspirational.  Nicky, you are a gem.  I treasure you as your heart and love is beyond anything else.  I feel like the underlying heavy tone, with plenty of light and bright moments, seeped right into my bones, as the storyline, the characters, the underlying meaning, was truly..breathtaking.  Gah….I absolutely loved it. 🙂

About Cara

I’m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex.

There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly.

Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve.

I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I’m a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, cooking, baking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and family, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

EXCERPT:

He was so fierce and striking, almost a mirage as the heat swirled around him, and something pulled her to him, almost as it pushed her away. Fire, flame and heat and it was all consuming and not enough at the same time. She dragged her arm up and pushed her hair back off her neck. Gosh I’m hot! Is the entire fricking sky the sun? It’s relentless. “Um.” She smiled because for some reason her body whispered ancient words, You know him.

She wanted to run her hands all over him. See if he felt as beautiful as he looked. Oh my God. She smacked her hand over her eyes. She was having a conversation with herself and she wasn’t sure how many selves were involved. Her brain was trying to talk her down from the cliff of ridiculousness, but her soul was electrified for the first time ever. Or was it woozy, icky and hot? I don’t feel so good.

“It’s hot out.” Wow, she was such a stellar linguist. But she didn’t dwell on how stupid she sounded, because his eyes blazed over her, like he wanted to devour her, but would hate every second of it. He is angry. The veil was back from the other night, and not a hint of a smile graced his beautiful face…more like scorn. His weird demeanor was one more thing she could add to the crazy list of things happening at the moment. She liked lists. Car in ruins, check. Feel like I might faint, check. Sweating like pig, check. Beautiful mystery man I can’t stop dreaming about from the bar Friday night glaring at me, check. She unstuck herself from her car and tried to communicate even while her thoughts tornadoed together.

“I need a mechanic,” she said, taking a step toward him. She wanted to be closer. “My uh…” She gestured to her van. “I think my starter’s having a tantrum again.” She wiped the sweat off her forehead. Not one single muscle moved in his body. He waited, his arms tight across his chest. She couldn’t even tell if he’d heard her. “Can you, uh, are you… Do you work for Matt?”

“Nope.” That one word, again. She wasn’t sure whether to feel lucky, relieved or insulted. Why did she feel such burning around him? And why did he glare at her like he hated her?

“Did I, um, do something?” she asked. Lordy her tongue was like sludge.

He pulled a water bottle out of his back pocket and guzzled some down. Oh, cold water. “We’re booked up. You’ll have to take your infidelity and your piece-of-shit car somewhere else.” And with his final punch thrown, he tossed the empty water bottle in the dumpster, turned and walked away.

“What?” she whispered. Standing there boiling under the sweltering day on asphalt so hot it even smelled like fresh tar, with sweat sticking her curls to her cheek and forehead, his words hit her like a lance. A hidden thorn from the most beautiful rosebush. Unexpected pain.

She also begins to paint again, something she’s been unable to do since her breakup. It’s tempting to stay on Kauai, but she has obligations back in Los Angeles.

Life gets more complicated when circumstances keep putting her close to Leonardo Medici. Not only is he drop-dead gorgeous, he’s a local celebrity. But Kaitlyn can’t shake the feeling he’s hiding something.

EXCERPT:

I let my eyes roam about his face, memorizing the details—my artist’s habit, or so I told myself. I wanted to run my fingers along his dark brooding eyebrows, down his perfect nose, curve around his high cheekbones, and caress those kissable lips. I had the urge to create a sculpture of this perfect Mr. Medici. This flawless being that looked and stood like a Greek god.

His impressive physique made me imagine him as Zeus, or perhaps Poseidon, who had walked straight out of a romantic fantasy novel, with a taste for mortal women.

I really needed to stop reading those books.

I took a step back, composing myself with the little dignity I had left. “Mr. Medici, how may I help you?”

He stood silent, just examining me. I wasn’t sure how much time had passed when he broke away.

“I think you did enough,” he said and pivoted sharply, his dress shoes tapping against the tile.

I shook my head in disbelief as I watched him strut out the door. I was the unicorn and he was the skeleton. He’d just eaten me alive, taken all my glitter power and magic with him. I didn’t know why I cared.

Oh, yes I do. He might be one of Abby’s biggest customers. This could cost her.

“Mr. Medici. Wait.” I burst out and sprinted after him.

Office Grump by Nicole Snow Book Blitz w/ Synopsis, Excerpt, Review, and, Giveaway!

Office Grump
Nicole Snow
Publication date: November 12th 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Nicole Snow returns with a fierce and hilarious office romance where two sworn enemies make undeniable lovers.

My “interview” with bosshole supreme was anything but normal.
He picked the worst day ever to chase me off my favorite park bench.
I retaliated with a spray of cinnamon latte all over his Italian shoes.
Then—for some unholy reason—Magnus Heron offered me a job.

Even his name sounds like a piece of work.
Guess what? He is.
But when you’re single, broke, and barely surviving in Chicago, you hop on the gift horse offering a six-figure salary and ride.
I picked the stallion on a one-way trip to hell.

It’s not the impossibly long hours working under Grump-zilla.
It’s not the fact that he’s snarly, demanding, horribly rich, and chiseled.
It’s not even the pesky way he makes me blush every flipping time we’re together.
Mag is my boss. I’m his lowly assistant. Some rules are carved in stone.

That’s my mantra until we’re sharing a sunset too beautiful for life.
Alone with wandering lips, whispered secrets, and disaster in the making.
The plan was simple: punch the clock, get paid, and keep hating my boss.
What’s the blueprint when the office grump brings me to my knees?

Full-length enemies-to-lovers romance with the banter, intrigue, and slow-burn love worthy of a Happily Ever After. The bossman from Hades meets the hellion he totally can’t stand—until he can’t live without her.

EXCERPT:

Heron chuckles, burning me alive with that lightning in his eyes. “You must have eclectic taste for an English major. Wasn’t that the other degree listed next to fine arts on your resume?”

I scan the menu. “Huh?”

“I mean, to enjoy The Fireman’s Pregnant Tinkerbell.”

I’m busy reading the entrees—and frowning because there are no sandwiches, probably no fries, ugh—so it takes a second for his words to click.

Fireman’s Pregnant Tinkerbell? He must’ve seen my Amazon search.

Oh, great.

I decide to play it cool. After all, my personal shopping has zilch to do with him.

“Why would it have to be eclectic? There’s a literary reference right in the name. Sounds very English major-y to me,” I say.

“English major-y? Is that a word?” He holds his water up, taking a long, sardonic pull off the glass.

God. If only I could clock him in the nose right here.

“It is now,” I say without looking up.

“Interesting. I must’ve missed the part in Barrie’s work where Tinkerbell even met the fireman.” The bastard winks.

Winks.

My face heats at his words and I abhor how good he is at getting me all riled in more ways than one.

Yeah, no, I decide.

He’s not getting the satisfaction.

I scoff—I have to do something with the fire in my veins—and set the menu down so I can meet his eyes. “I’d love to meet a fireman. If I ever have an evening off in time for dinner, I’ll cruise Tinder or Match for one.”

“You’re serious? Firemen are your type?” His face becomes more serious and slightly angrier than it was like two seconds ago.

Oh, God. Thanks, Mom, for putting me in this predicament. You couldn’t just write a book with a more mysterious title?

I take a deep breath and look him square in the eye.

“Why does that shock you, Mr. Heron? Are you fireman-phobic? They’re heroic, hardworking, protective, and risk their butts all day to save lives,” I say, registering his grump-face growly mood with some satisfaction. I can’t resist adding a dollop of icing to the cake. “Plus, they’ve got big hoses. I know those are things preppy business guys probably wouldn’t know about, right?”

His face is, for once, completely blank.

I’ve caught him off guard.

Ha. I like being the one on top, so I continue while I’m on a roll.

“Especially the big hose part. I mean, you wouldn’t even know what to do with equipment like that. It’s not your fault. There’s no need for a long, thick hose in boardrooms.” I smirk at him and flip through my textbook of a menu again.

A second later, I’m actually a little mortified. My face heats, no doubt giving away the fact that I’m not as confident as my words.

What’s gotten into me?

Release Blitz Excerpt:

Connor He tilted his head slightly, and suddenly his lips met mine in a gentle kiss. It was almost uncertain, and for a fraction of a second, my body stilled as it tried to process what the fuck was going on. Except I couldn’t process anything. I could barely even breathe because Patrick was kissing me. Patrick was kissing me. His lips were warm and soft and more perfect than anything I’d ever felt. I wanted to live in this moment forever or encase it in my memory so I’d never forget it. My mouth pressed back against his. Time slowed to a crawl. And then the kiss was over and nothing in the world would ever be the same again. I stared at him as we broke apart. My heart was racing, my mouth opening and then closing again as no words came out. I couldn’t believe he’d kissed me. Especially here, in front of his entire family. And now I had to pretend my entire universe hadn’t just exploded into a billion new star systems and that this was a totally normal and absolutely non-special thing because Patrick and I kissed all the time. I mean, we were dating, why wouldn’t we suck face at every possible opportunity? Except that sounded weird and gross because that was exactly the opposite of what had just happened. Sure, I wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to make out with Patrick. And if that happened to come with a side of groping, grinding, and getting naked, I would be starkers before you could say go. But that kiss was different; it was tender and affectionate. The sort of kiss you might give someone you loved… Which made my head spin even more because that made no flipping sense.

Strawberry Kisses

Strawberry Kisses by Charlie Novak

                                                    “Sweet, Dedicated, Longtime Love”

A beautifully sweet, heart-warming, friends-to-lovers story about first time true love, with an overabundance of nervous thoughts of discovering that actual forever type-of-love.  I loved my most recent read as Strawberry Kisses, by Charlie Novak, was a delicious love story filled with gorgeous scenery, as well as humorous, and also tearful moments.  I found this low-angst yet addicting storyline; one that contained such wonderful friends, loving family members, and, a touch of heart-break, to be enough for this reader to stay glued from cover to cover as it cohesively was a wonderful read.

While I had wished for more character and overall story development, and despite the existence of somewhat confusing British vernaculars, and a somewhat different kind-of-ending, I thoroughly enjoyed Strawberry Kisses.  With its feel-good underlying storyline, yummy dessert infused giddiness, and newly discovered revelations, I really enjoy it. 🙂

Perth Shifters, Book 2

Omega Aodhan Donne has buried his past, his life revolves around his chocolaterie, Little Star, a place where he creates sweet and happy memories. Demisexual, and used to being shoved in the friends category by the time he falls for someone, he throws all his energy into creating romantic moments for others in his store, neglecting his needs. His highlight for two years has been the man who visits his shop every Tuesday.

Beta Thomas Wilson is an historian who believes the past should be unearthed, working as the curator at Western Australia’s only shifter museum, educating children and adults about shifter history. Quiet and hard-working, he allows himself to visit Aodhan at Little Star once a week, as a treat.

When Aodhan decides he wants to get know Thomas better, he offers him a window into a complicated history that influenced the lives of shifters in the whole of Australia, and faces the possibility of Thomas learning too much about his dark past.

After deciding to take it slow, their unconventional relationship becomes a whirlwind, sweeping them up together and blowing open the doors hiding their painful pasts. They couldn’t face their truths alone, but if they’re willing to face them together, Aodhan and Thomas may get the love they’ve always yearned for.

Excerpt:

When Aodhan returned, he tangled his fingers together, then reached past Thomas to take his coffee and bring it over to the table. He picked up the Reserved sign himself, and Thomas followed, placing his briefcase down by the chair he always occupied, before sitting. ‘I’m a little alarmed,’ Thomas said. ‘It’s nothing like that. I didn’t want to be interrupted. That’s all.’ Aodhan cleared his throat, then cleared it again, then shook his head like he was exasperated with himself. He shoved his fidgeting hands beneath the table, and Thomas saw his forearms tense, his shoulders bunch. ‘Aodhan,’ he said, at a loss. ‘No, god, look at me, I’m making you worry for nothing. Honestly, it’s nothing. But I want to be honest with you.’ He shook his head again and sighed. ‘There’s a few things about me that other people might think of as strange. Whether it’s how I paint my nails. Or how I think gender is stupid, at least for me. It’s also that, I’m- Man, I imagined this conversation would be a disaster and even what I saw in my head was smoother than how this is going.’ He placed one of his hands on the table, his fingers tapping restively. Thomas reacted without thinking, reaching up and placing his hand over Aodhan’s. The fingers stilled, and Thomas thought he was being too forward, breaking the rules, but Aodhan just stared at the place they touched. Thomas felt Aodhan’s smooth skin, the alternating heat and coolness; heat from the coffee machine, coolness from being in an air-conditioned shop that was designed to protect chocolate from the elements. He wanted to trail his fingers up Aodhan’s forearm, and with how agitated he seemed, Thomas wanted to hold him. In that moment, he didn’t care about how scared he was of repeating whatever he’d had with Chris, he just wanted to hold him. ‘Tell me,’ Thomas said. ‘I like you.’ Thomas blinked at him, fingers tightening helplessly on Aodhan’s hand. ‘I know it’s stupid,’ Aodhan said in a rush. ‘I know it’s too late. I know it’s been two years. I’m not even what you’re looking for, I’m sure of it. I’m demisexual, but it’s not even that, because most demi people- Okay, I don’t know most demi people, to be fair! But on the internet, it sure seems like I’m an odd one out among people who feel like odd ones out. It was really nice when you thought I was normal, honestly, please tell me to shut up now.’ ‘I like you, too,’ Thomas heard himself say. Aodhan’s eyes snapped up to his. ‘I mean I like you as more than a colleague-friend.’ ‘Yes.’ Thomas couldn’t help smiling at that. ‘So do I.’

EXCERPT:

Two Years Ago.

“Are you sure?”

A faint smile curved Nathan Hardy’s lips as he studied the man across the desk from him. He could tell Cain Sawyer was worried about him despite the frown darkening his rugged face.

“Positive.”

The lines furrowing Cain’s brow deepened. “If you need more time, I’ll talk to the other partners and—”

“You don’t have to do that, Cain. I’ve made up my mind.”

Cain opened his mouth, paused, and released a rueful sigh.

“You always were a stubborn bastard, even when we were in college,” he muttered.

Nathan grinned and climbed to his feet. “And you’ve been a great boss and friend.” A twinge shot down his left thigh. He masked a grimace at the cramp.

Cain rose and escorted him to the elevator. “I’ll call you when I’ve organized a farewell party.”

“You don’t need to do that,” Nathan protested. “I’m the one deserting you guys.”

Cain narrowed his eyes. “You’re having a party, end of story. I’m not letting the best designer in Seattle leave my firm without a proper goodbye.”

Nathan rubbed the back of his neck, conscious of the stares they were attracting. “Alright.”

“And don’t be a stranger when you’re back in town,” Cain said. Nathan startled when the other man pulled him in for a quick hug. “There’ll always be a job here for you if you change your mind.”

Nathan swallowed the sudden lump in his throat.

“Thanks, Cain. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve a friend like you.”

Cain’s eyes gleamed. “If you’re having regrets—”

“I’m not.” Nathan flashed him a remorseful smile. “Not about this.”

He rode the elevator to the first floor, exited the high rise, and paused on the sidewalk. Horns honked on the busy avenue in front of him. Nathan ignored the hustle and bustle of the traffic and the crowd milling around him, and turned to gaze at the building he’d just walked out of.

This is it. I’m officially out of a job.

That thought should have scared the living daylights out of him. Except it didn’t. Not much did these days.

Well, they do say nearly dying does that to people.

His leg throbbed again, reminding him of the reason why he’d just quit the dream job he’d worked so hard for over the years. Nathan clenched his teeth and massaged his stiff thigh muscles. He hadn’t fully stretched this morning after his run. He waited until the spasm passed, raised his face to the hazy blue sky, and took a deep breath.

Today was the start of the rest of his life.

He turned right and headed down the avenue. By the time he’d walked the two miles to his apartment building, his limp had become more evident.

Lisa would kill me if she saw me right now.

The thought of the bubbly and energetic physical therapist brought a smile to Nathan’s face as he crossed the lobby. Though he hadn’t been the most agreeable patient when they’d first met, Lisa had never given up on him. He knew the reason he could walk and run again was due to her perseverance over the past eight months. His smile faded when he recalled their last appointment the day before.

Who knew she’d cry so much?

A bolt of sadness stabbed through Nathan as he got off the elevator on the tenth floor. Saying goodbye to his old life was proving to be much harder than he’d thought it’d be.

He inserted his key in the door of his condo and paused.

It was already unlocked.

There were only two people beside him who had keys to his apartment. His former fiancée Melissa Klein and his brother Dean.

The smell of camellias greeted him when he entered the condo.

Nathan sighed and made a mental note to berate his brother. Dean had obviously told Melissa he was going into the office to hand in his letter of resignation. She would never have come over if she’d known he’d be there otherwise.

He found her on her knees in the bedroom, with her head buried in the closet. Nathan glanced at the half-stuffed overnight bag on the floor before clearing his throat.

Melissa startled and whirled around. “God!” She pressed a hand to her chest. “You scared the crap out of me!”

The guilt he’d been living with these last few weeks stormed through him all over again when he saw the shadows under her eyes and her pinched lips.

“Sorry.”

They stared at each other in silence, unspoken words swirling in the air between them. It was two months to the day since Nathan had broken off their engagement.

Melissa’s expression grew guarded. “I didn’t know you’d be back so soon. I’ll be out of your hair as fast as I can.”

She turned and started rooting around the closet again.

Nathan hesitated. “Do you want a coffee?”

Melissa stiffened. “No.”

Nathan leaned a shoulder against the doorframe. He felt tired all of a sudden. “You’re not even going to look at me?”

Melissa whipped around, her blonde hair flying around her face and her blue eyes bright with barely suppressed anger.

“What do you want me to look at, Nathan?! You dumped me three weeks before our goddamn wedding!”

Shit.

Nathan clenched his jaw and ran a hand through his hair.

“It was the right thing to do, Mel. I know you don’t believe me right now, but I would have made you miserable.”

A muscle jumped in Melissa’s cheek. “Why? Because you don’t think I would have coped with the reality that you might be crippled?” Her knuckles whitened on the sweatshirt she was holding. “I’m not that shallow, Nathan!”

He walked inside the room and sat on the edge of his bed. Their bed.

“I know you aren’t, Mel. And that’s why I needed to let you go. Because—” He faltered.

Melissa’s throat worked convulsively. “Because what, Nathan?”

Nathan took a shallow breath.

Here goes.

“Because I think I was in love with the idea of being in love with you. As were you.”

Melissa recoiled as if he’d physically slapped her, the color draining from her face. Nathan fisted his hands in his lap.

God, forgive me for being such an asshole.

There were many things he had come to regret since he’d woken up in hospital ten months ago, days after the horrific accident that had taken place on Christmas Eve. He’d been heading home to see his family in Bellevue after completing one of the biggest projects of his career when a truck had slipped on an icy patch of road on the opposite side of the highway and careened across the median and into oncoming traffic.

Nathan was one of a handful of people who had survived the multi-vehicle collision that had claimed six lives that day and three more later in hospital. He was put into a medically induced coma and had three rounds of surgery to fix his ruptured spleen and smashed leg before they woke him up.

It was only when he saw pictures of the accident and the remains of his car that Nathan realized how close to death he’d been. According to his doctors, it was a miracle he wasn’t paralyzed from the waist down after his body was almost crushed in half by the dashboard of his Prius.

The months Nathan had spent in hospital and rehab had made him face some hard truths.

There was more to life than working all the hours God made, however passionate he was about his job.

He wasn’t in love with Melissa.

And he desperately needed a change of pace and scenery.

Dean was the first person he’d admitted these new and terrifying feelings to. Although his younger brother had looked like he was ready to punch his lights out for deciding to dump Melissa weeks before their wedding, he’d been by Nathan’s side when the latter had finally spoken to their parents about his future plans.

Nathan had known that breaking things off with Mel would hit them hard, since she was the daughter of their closest friends. And he’d ready for their angry words and recriminations. But he’d misjudged how traumatic nearly losing their firstborn son had been on Ben and Helen Hardy. Though they’d expressed their disappointment, they’d not shunned him.

Melissa, on the other hand, had not been as forgiving.

Nathan knew ending their engagement was the right thing to do. He didn’t love her, not the way he should love the person he intended to spend the rest of his life with. He’d realized this when he’d seen her for the first time after the accident. It was as if a veil had been lifted from his eyes and he could see everything clearly for the first time in his life.

“Do you really mean that?”

Melissa’s hoarse words brought him back to the present.

Nathan gazed at the woman he had hurt and cursed his old self once more.

“I like you, Mel. A lot. As a friend.” His lips stretched in a thin smile. “As a lover. But I don’t love you the way a husband should love his wife. I know I sound like a callous bastard right now, but trust me when I say that I’m the wrong man for you. You deserve better, Mel. You deserve true love and a happy ever after. You deserve a man who will cherish you for the beautiful person that you are.”

Tears bloomed in Melissa’s eyes. A sob escaped her throat.

Nathan rose and went to her then. As he knelt on the floor of his bedroom and closed his arms around the woman he had wounded so badly with his words and actions, he made a promise to himself.

He had been given a second chance at a life. He doubted the Heavens would give him a stab at true love too. But if they did, if the person he was truly meant to be with ever crossed his path, he would cling on to them and never let them go. And he would treasure them for the rest of his life.

Review:

Wyatt (Twilight Falls #4)Wyatt by A.M. Salinger

“A Sizzling, Exciting, Heart Warming Story”

A beautiful, heart-warming and heat-filled story, about living life to the fullest, for self-discovery, and for breaking the mold on one’s mind and heart in order to find true happiness and absolute peace.  I loved this new story for so many different reasons.  I was beyond excited for the first-time experiences, the chemistry, the passion, and the hidden determination of letting go in order to find that special kind-of-love.

Wyatt, by A.M. Salinger, was such an addicting, sizzling, sexy, and hopeful kind-of-story.  I loved the premise of living life to it’s fullest, of being strong and open-minded, of being able to take the plunge into the unknown in order to experience what had previously been deemed as unknown and unobtainable.  It drew this reader into the story as the exciting unknown was certainly palpable.

The characters of this story were wonderful, supportive, and, definitely squeal-worthy.  The cameos were plentiful and family members knowingly attentive.  I’ve always gravitated toward gfy stories, which contain electrifying new experiences for the character(s).  In this particular story, I played the part of cheerleader and found myself cheering like crazy for Nathan as he made his way through his newly and naturally formed friendship with Wyatt.  And of course, when that moment occurred for Nathan….I-could-not-contain-my-excitement-for-him.  That particular moment set the stage for an exhilarating and endearing relationship for both men.  And it certainly came….to an extent.

With a smoothly developed initial friendship between Nathan and Wyatt, interspersed with a few time jumps, I had expected so much more.  It is in this reader’s opinion that, it was a heated form of self-discovery more than anything else.  Which is great, in general, but, there needed to be more of a balanced plot.  I  needed more character background, more development to their friendship, and more development to their newly formed seemingly one-sided relationship.  I crazy loved Nathan, but, Wyatt was an enigma, I certainly really liked him, but felt that there was more to learn about him in order to really love him.

Despite having a fast-paced plot, a smattering of typos, questionable moments, and a odd ending, Wyatt was truly a great story with wonderfully likable characters and a warmly addicting storyline that has this reader eagerly waiting for more from the Twilight Falls Series.  I really liked it. 🙂
